i'm not so great .. but first i think about the subject , then the composition , how it can help me to bring out the message and then the tech stuff .
i have an slr but photography is more about the photographer then the camera though an slr is really nice

All that area in Yellowstone with the hot springs was considered sacred by Native Americans, and violence etc would have been unthinkable in a place like that. Many of the springs have medicinal mineral qualities. Not unlike the Dead Sea area where the Essenes were based.
It does have a weird ghostly beauty. As if the spirits were floating all around.
