Description 24" tall unfired ceramic piece. I usally post pieces that have a story or theme but this is for those whom enjoy the study of the human from in an under the skin sort of way. This was an older demo piece I did and use occasionally for students to have some 3-D reference for sculpting,
I also have small pieces that DAer MsJ777 sells for me online at this... [link] ..... So take a peek if you like.

Just amazingly awesome. Reminds me of that artist (whose name I have completely forgotten) who plasticizes corpses and displays thier flayed anatomy as amazing works of art. Only...this is clay. Not a corpse.

...unless there's a corpse under the clay.

...and that'd just be gross.

Wow awsome. Great detail and proportion. Thanks for the information on the building process. I've never made anything that big out of clay. How did you hollow it out? In sections?

Im Slow on the replys lately, little time to go on line. For pieces this size I usally use an armature to stand them up while still very wet, the armature looks something like two progs stuck out from a pipe stabing the figure into the shoulder blades, I rough out the figure skipping the details ( the hands look like no finger gloves), then I lay the figure down and wire tool it in half from the head to calves for this piece, the arms and lower legs are solid, then I gently hollow it from 1/2" to 1/4" depending on the area, then slip and score the clay puting it back together, I let the clay firm up till leather hard and tie it to the armature and do the carved detail. this piece was fired laying down but I sometimes make clay armatures to fire with a piece to keep them from saging during fireing like my sibling piece that has an arm out in space and is life size.

That's really impressive work. The detail is amazing.
Did you take alot of sketches from books (medical or just general), or did you just do some rough outlines and check as you went?
As always, excellant work! O_O

This one was from an old drawing I had done from a model that I had broken down (drawn) as an anatomy study. I usally go as far as I can using a 7.5 head height proportion from the old Greek formula then make adjustments for the pose and/or figure it is to portray, if just an anatomical figure and not of someone in paticular then I can just have fun with details.

It looks quite androgynous. Was it intended that way to acommodate teaching on both male and female bodies?

Thanks for commenting, This figure was based on a female figures proportions I only enhanced the muscules size for easy visual reference wich for some people the muscles may make the form more masculine, but yes I took the middle of the road figure as to understand either male or female composition of anatomy.

As always, I am fascinated by your spectacular detail, sense of form, and amazing ability to bring to something inanimate a sense of life. It is lovely to see professional work on deviantArt.

wow! this is amazing...
twice as big as the model i made and about 10x the detail, this is great!
i really like how much detail you've managed to get in all the musculature.. looks very accurate to me, not a fiber out of place.
excellent choice of pose for showing off all the different areas, the one arm up offers a good assymetry that lets you see things that you can't in the other arm. if only it had this for reference when i was making mine

great work as always!

Thanks for the comment, The pose was intentional for student reference and the work probably took twice as long to make than yours and I have done ah well um many of them over well ummm many years.
It was also your piece that made me relize this site DA is not just people veiwing art but artist learning the skills and trade if not just learning to learn.

but after time yes, i've begun to use it almost strictly as a tool. it's working very well.

this is a beautiful piece and stone ware is great i love the human form with skin or with out i think that you should make a mold of it and cast it in different type of materials and use think about casting it in bronze and then it will be a lot harder to break. It is one of the best piece that I have every seen in clay and the craftsmanship is a think of beauty keep up the good work it. You and my muse

Thanks, I am working on one that would be articulated more of a skeletal figure for artistic use to be cast in whichever happens to be the best medium for the purpose (not ceramic) so far its just figuring out the joining of the parts for the best or most accurate movement.

It broke on an arm and a leg from to thin of hollowing, but as I said it is a visual reference piece so I just repaired it and keep on using it.

what kind of clay do you use? or at least what kind did you use for this one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Intro-Extro In reply to TheTrieckel [2005-02-25 05:49:22 +0000 UTC]

This is a cone 10 stone ware body that has a medium grog (ground-up fired clay) called Anasazi made by LAGUNA clay in the south west most ceramic clay companys have some sort of equivilant I use this kind in most the ceramic pieces I have here, right now Im using a MAYAN RED from NEW MEXICO clay if you are thinking that this type of clay has extra strength it does'nt have anything that anyother stoneware clay with grog has, some pieces still break, blow up in the kiln, or warp and sag in a fireing its mostly the handling of the clay through out the whole process.
