The Greater Man

"You push the bell,"

"No, you do it!  I did it last year!"

"Oh, for goodness sake!  We argue about this every year!"

"I know, so push the bell already so we can stop arguing about it and get some candy!"

Kenny Tennyson stamped his foot and huffed at his adoptive brother, Devlin.  Kenny was currently dressed in a detailed Sumo Slammer costume and Devlin was currently wearing a tattered labcoat with red paint splattered across it.  A pair of red and black swirly goggles sat on the top of his head.

Their little sister Gwenie scowled at them and tapped her foot impatiently.  Her round, child-like face was framed by a pink bob wig and her metallic space girl costume glinted in the light of the countless candles in innumerable pumpkins that lined the long walk of the house they stood before.

It was a fairly stately home.  A fountain was out front, the lights under its surface were shifting from green to purple to orange and back again.  A large selection of yard ornaments were placed in the front yard and cotton cobwebs were woven along the fence and the trees leading to the walk.

Gwenie looked longingly up at the house.

"You boys are so silly.  You make such a fuss over nothing.  I'll go do it,"

The two boys watched the younger, tinier girl press on ahead without them.  Devlin sharply nudged Kenny's shoulder.

"Dude, she's totally going ahead of us,"

Kenny nodded before patting his brother on the back.

"She is indeed a greater man than I, Devlin,"

The two boys followed a few feet behind the girl, but appeared ready to leap into action if necessary.  Gwenie looked back at them, sighed and shook her head, as if their trepidation was completely unfounded.

When they at last reached the door, Gwenie reached up and pressed the bell without a moment's hesitation.  Both Kenny and Devlin inhaled audibly.

There was some shuffling on the other side of the door before it opened, revealing a girl somewhere between Gwenie and Ken's age.  Wide blue eyes blinked, accentuated by dark, corpse-like makeup and a tattered dress.

"Hi, Gwenie!" she piped up cheerfully.

Gwenie waved.

"Hello, Celeste.  That's a great costume.  What are you supposed to be?"
"A zombie prom queen," Celeste replied.
"Cool," Gwenie smiled, giving her a thumbs up.
Kenny nudged Devlin.

"She's not so bad.  I wish she'd answer the door more often," he said.

Devlin shushed him.

"Celeste? Are your little friends here?" a smooth, deep voice asked somewhat cheerfully.

The sound made the boys' blood run cold and the tiny hairs on their arms raised.

Celeste nodded.

"Yes, Daddy!" she chirped, pulling the door open to reveal a grey skin, sunken faced ghoul in an ornate vampire costume, complete with oversized fake fangs fitted onto his teeth.

Gwenie smiled again.

"Hello, Mr. Morningstar.  How are you?"

"Why, just fine, Ms. Tennyson.  Having a Happy Halloween?  How is your father?"

"Yes, sir...and he's doing well, thank you,"

"Send him my regards, won't you?"

Gwenie nodded as Mr. Morningstar handed her a large treat bag for her treat sack.

A grotesque smile broke out across Mr. Morningstar's face as he patted Celeste on the head.

"You have fun now, Sparkle Muffin and be home before ten,"

Celeste nodded and bowed from above the waist.

"Of course, Daddy,"

Mr. Morningstar cast an intense gaze blue gaze on the two boys in a look that made them tense.

"Happy hunting, children," he called, waving in a calm, serene way that seemed eerie before dropping two large packages of candy into Kenny and Devlin's treat bags.
