It was a very cold winter afternoon, and Dib was walking over to Zim’s house once again. They hadn’t talked to each other in about a day since they had another one of their awkward kisses. This wasn’t weird for them though; one of them would just come to the other’s house and forget all about this weird little encounter. It was Dib’s turn this time around, as he was the one who had initiated this in the first place. It was almost like a rule to the two of them. Whoever started it, finished it. Dib and Zim had been sitting and watching bad movies together. For Dib, it was one of his days in which he felt that he really liked Zim. The movie they had been watching was playing a kissing scene, which is when Dib had made his move. Of course, after the movie was over, he had left Zim's base to lessen the weirdness of the situation. He wasn’t feeling like he had been yesterday, so of course, he was fine with going over and fixing things with Zim.

Dib knocked on Zim’s door, who yelled for Dib to come in like usual. He came inside, walking over to Zim, who was sitting on the couch watching TV.

“Hey uh, Zim, sorry about… ya know… the kissing thing again.” Dib’s face colored into a light pink hue, and Zim shrugged.

“Eh, Zim doesn’t really care too much, then again you know I don’t.” Zim looked over to Dib with a rather blank expression, turning his attention back to the weird show that was on the TV.

“Well that’s good, but listen, I can’t stay for very long. I promised a friend I would go to the movies with her today.” Dib looked over Zim, who was giving him a confused look.

“What friend, that weird girl with the metal thing in her mouth?” Dib sighed, nodding at that. He hated it when Zim couldn’t remember people’s names at least.

“Yes Zim, it’s her, and her name is Gretchen by the way…” Zim shrugged again, moving his hand and signaling for Dib to leave already.

“Yes yes, go have fun with your human friend.” Dib was quite surprised by Zim’s apathy towards the situation, but he didn’t think anything of it.

“Oh uh, alright, I will come and hang out with you tomorrow Zim!” Zim waved Dib goodbye, who closed the door behind him and let out a long sigh he had been holding in.

“For a second there I thought he was onto me…” It was true, Zim got really jealous when Dib hung around other boys, but he never seemed to mind when he hung around with girls. Zim was probably assuming that Dib was gay, and so it allowed Dib to go on 'dates' with girls. Of course, he was keeping that a secret from Zim, he wasn’t going to just let the little alien know that. It would break his heart for sure, and Dib knew Zim couldn’t handle that.

Dib arrived back home, Gretchen sitting inside on the couch and casually talking to Gaz. She stopped once she heard Dib enter his house.

“Hey, Dib! Are you ready to go?” She smiled at him, her braces shining in the light. Dib smiled, walking back outside onto the sidewalk with Gretchen following behind.

“Hey uh, Gretchen, this is a bit embarrassing but I… don’t have a car…” Gretchen smiled at him.

“It’s fine, we can just take a taxi! I brought extra money just in case too!” Dib thought that it was pretty weird that Gretchen was always so prepared for things like this, but he didn’t really care about that so much. Gretchen was pretty much his only other friend outside of Zim, and she believed in the paranormal just like him. To him, she was basically the perfect friend. They could talk about all this crazy stuff with each other and nobody would judge them. But of course, just like Zim, she had a huge crush on him. It put a lot of pressure on him, especially when his father always hinted at Dib wanting him to date a female. Dib always hated it, as he was still questioning his own sexuality. He hadn’t dated anyone yet, and he wasn’t sure if he was ready to. Gretchen may like Dib, but unlike Zim, she wasn’t so pushy about it. She would step off when she seemed to get a bit too clingy. Maybe that's why Dib was leaning towards dating her for his own experimentation.

Gretchen and Dib had made it to their movie safely. It was some sort of Zombie movie, which had tons of sequels to it. It was a huge franchise right now, so everyone wanted to go and see it. After they did finish watching it, they left the theater, quite unimpressed by the movies horrible effects and cheap look. They were practically in tears from laughing.

“That was the worst sequel yet! I can’t believe how many times they were able to save people with that stupid little antidote! They had like 2 drops!” Dib was referring to a scene in which scientists had made a very small amount of Zombie antidote that would make people immune to Zombie bites.

“God, please Dib! The best part had to be where they were saved by that freaking infected wolf! THAT was priceless!” The two of them were still laughing, Dib’s giggle-fest interrupted by a familiar raspy voice.

“That was awful, Keef-thing! I refuse to go to these horrible earth movies if you continue to touch me in that fashion!” Dib looked behind him, seeing Zim and Keef standing together after coming out of the movies. They seemed to be having an argument, in which tons of people had gathered around to watch.

“Aw shut up Zim, you know you liked it!” Keef glared at Zim, pulling him close and wrapping his arms around Zim. Zim shoved Keef away.

“Unhand me, Keef! I said I do not wish for you to touch me! Now go home!” Keef wasn’t having it, and so he grabbed onto Zim roughly.

“I won’t go home until we settle this!” Keef growled, his robotic red eyes scanning the crowd.

“WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU ALL LOOKING AT!?” It was pretty clear Keef was drunk, as he had a bit of a slur in his voice. He was silenced by Zim, who kicked Keef in the groin. He recoiled, holding his crotch with his hands.

“Now… GO HOME KEEF!” Keef growled at Zim, reluctantly walking off as Zim scoffed, shooing away all the people that had been staring. Dib looked at the situation in shock, Gretchen also having her gaze on Zim, who was alone now. Dib took this chance to walk over to ZIm, who had begun to make his way over to the street to call a taxi. Gretchen followed Dib, of course, stopping once Dib had grabbed Zim.

“I said DO NOT TOUCH M-” Zim stopped when he looked back and saw who it was, giving the familiar human a confused look.

“Dib? What are you doing here?...” Dib looked over at Gretchen, who was giving both of them a rather worried look.

“I was just watching a movie with Gretchen, then I saw you hanging with KEEF again…” Zin scoffed, rolling his eyes at Dib.

“Yes, I was hanging out with the Keef-thing again, and I don’t want to hear what you have to say about it!” Zim snapped at him defensively.

“Well, you are gonna hear what I have to say, Zim! I already told you he’s bad news, and yet you still let him do this shit!” Zim glared at Dib.

“I can be ‘friends’ with whoever I wish to be! Now, I am leaving to go home! I will see you at Hi Skool tomorrow DIB!” Zim spat, walking over to the road and calling over a taxi. Once the taxi drove off with Zim in it, Dib looked back to Gretchen, who placed a hand on Dibs arm.

“I know you are worried about him Dib, but he’s really stubborn. I-I bet you will get through to him though! He trusts you right?” Dib sighed, his shoulders slouching a bit.

“I will eventually, but I’m afraid Keef will have hurt Zim by then! I just don’t want Zim to get hurt!” Gretchen nodded, giving Dib a quick pat on the back before stepping away and giving him some space.

“Well just go home and sleep on it. You can always go talk to him at skool tomorrow right?” Dib bit the inside of his lip, nodding.

“I’m just worrying a bit too much I guess. Zim’s a strong guy, I mean he wouldn’t just let Keef hurt him like that.” Gretchen smiled at Dib, her braces glinting brightly in the little light there was outside now.

“That’s the spirit, Dib! Now c’mon, lets get you home!” The two of them called over a taxi, giving the driver directions to Dib’s house.

The two of them arrived at Dib’s house, Dib stopping in front of his door to say goodbye to Gretchen.

“Thanks for going to that terrible movie with me Dib, it was actually a lot of fun!” Gretchen gave Dib a hug, beginning to make her way off to her own house.

“I’ll see ya tomorrow!” She waved to him before running to her house down the street. Dib smiled a bit, mumbling to himself as he walked inside.

When Dib arrived at school the next day, he wasn’t happy to see Keef and Zim talking again, though they seemed to be talking out the events of last night rather than fighting. At one point, Keef offered to hug Zim, who declined. They both eventually made their way to different classes, as the bell was going to ring soon. Dib just followed Zim, who was in first period with him. First period was science, which seemed to be 1 of 2 subjects he was even good at. Dib took his seat next to Zim, immediately starting a conversation with him.

“What were you and Keef talking about huh?” Zim looked over to Dib with his one good eye, looking a bit frustrated.

“Why were you watching us again? And why does it even matter, it was personal.” Dib sighed, giving Zim a worried glance.

“Zim, I’m really worried about you… seriously… All I ever see Keef do is hurt you.” Zim shrugged.

“Zim just needs friend’s other than just you, and Keef doesn’t ALWAYS do that. He was just drunk as hell.” Dib rubbed his eyes with his fingers, Zim seeming to miss the point completely.

“That’s the point though! He’s ALWAYS drunk as hell! You really need to stop being friends with him before something bad happens!” Zim crossed his arms, not wanting to listen to Dib’s advice.

“And I think you should stop being friends with that purple haired human, but Zim will not yell at you for that.” Dib was exasperated.

“This has nothing to do with her! For one, she’s actually nice, and two, she doesn’t get drunk and try to fuck me every chance she gets!” Zim turned his head away.

“Yeah yeah whatever, let’s not talk about this here. Just come to Zim’s base later and then we can talk.” Zim uncrossed his arms as the bell rang, lazily listening to the teacher as they spoke.

Once school had ended, Dib and Zim walked to his house together, not exchanging many words as they walked. Dib was the last into Zim’s base, closing the door behind him and sitting on Zim’s couch. Zim was already there, pulling off his disguise and placing it on a side table. Zim never took it off much, but when he did, his antennas showed, and you could clearly see the scar on his eye. The scar only reminded Dib of how much of an asshole he could be at times.

“Alright Dib-human, we can talk about Keef now.” Dib had almost forgotten that was what they were there to do, but he nodded, giving Zim a serious look.

“You need to stop being friends with Keef.” Zim sighed, knowing that’s what Dib was going to say.

“Listen, human, I know you are worried about Zim, but he can assure you he’s fine. He can take care of himself you know.” Dib shook his head, gently grabbing onto Zim arms so he would face him.

“Zim that’s not the point, he’s ABUSIVE. Just because he says sorry doesn’t mean he’s a good guy!”

“Dib, you act like I don’t know that already, but he’s the only other human I know! I refuse to be friends with any other human besides you and him! Dib felt like he was going to cry.

“Zim you don’t get it do you!? If you keep being friends with him he’s gonna do something bad! I don’t want you to get hurt again because of stupid people!” Dib looked away from Zim, as he was referring to himself.

“What are you talking about again Dib-stink?” Dib turned back to Zim, lightly placing his hand on Zim’s face and touching the scar around his eye with his finger. Zim sighed, realizing what Dib was talking about.

“I already forgave you human, you don’t need to keep feeling so bad. Besides, that was a long time ago, I know you won’t try and kill me again.”

“Zim I don’t care how long ago it was, I just don’t need another dumb person to come along and try to kill you.” Zim shook his head.

“You just don’t understand, Dib; Zim can’t just leave his friendship with Keef.” Dib raised an eyebrow at Zim, not understanding what he meant. Before he could ask Zim, he shook his head again.

“I will tell you later Dib, I don’t feel like discussing this any longer.” Zim turned on the TV before Dib could protest, the two of them silently staring at the screen.

I wish you could update this TT! I just binge read the whole story, and while, yes, there were some typos and at some point, you rely too much on the "tell" instead of "show", it's a really lovely story, quite sad at times but it's part of its charm.

I love ZaDr so much and yours happens to be one of the best fanfics out there about them.
