Description
Artist's Training Grounds Alumni Group - Week 13 - CHAOS! DISCORD! CONFUSION! BWA HA HAHAHA! *Ahem*. Excuse me. Got carried away there.I had a MIGHTY NEED to draw Discord, and still trying to figure out something for the theme, I had inspiration strike me right in the eyes with spiraling rainbows of harmony, the raw confusion on Discord's face when he realized, no, this time the elements were working together... and he was actually beaten!
And so, resealed in stone, I'm sure he's put right back on a pedastal back in Canterlot's statue garden. In a pose that's much less cocky this time. Look at his statue from the first part of Return to Harmony... he is clearly mocking Celestia and Luna even as they imprisoned him. He either didn't think the Elements would work, or believed he would get free somehow (probably sooner then he actually did). But this time, Celestia took precautions from that ever happening again. A sign. But just one, more then that would be a waste.
I actually have a theory about his freedom too, I think the reason he got free is because the Elements of Harmony were split from Celestia, weakening her spell. Initially, they were apparently bound to Celestia and Luna, and then after the Nightmare Moon incident, to just Celestia. It wasn't until Twilight and her friends rediscovered the Elements that they became bound to new ponies, and Celestia's original spell on Discord began to fail. Thus, why such a simple act of disharmony as three fillies fighting was able to give Discord the power he needed to finally breach the spell.
I loved Discord, as a villain, it became apparent to me that his main goal was to let Twilight become corrupted without his intervention, while he more or less directly hypnotized the other five ponies, he let Twilight come to the conclusion herself. I mean, wow, that's harsh. He could easily have just smacked her in the head and brought her down, but he wanted to let her suffer through the loss of her friends and see how hopeless it was. In Nightmare Moon, there's that spark of love within her that enables her redemption. In Discord, as an apparently primal force of Chaos, I don't see how that could be possible.

Since the mane six represent and in a way ARE the elements of harmony, and there is six of them. But what did celestia and luna represent? were thhere somehow other people celestia did not mention? I think that 's necalace, the purple gem kind of looks like raritys element, but celestia could have been responsiblity or something, and the elements were totally different. idk, whaddya think?

The look of horror suit him quite well. now let us "decorate" this extremely dull exhibit.
*13 minutes later*
*Discord now has funny looking make-up, a pair of disguise glasses, a pair of pants & underpants, & few brick below his behind....*
whew.....done at last

I love that sign. Also, I could see repemption for him, but I have to seperate it from my personal shipping ideas, so nah, doesn't count,

I've seen some interesting takes on 'redemption' for Discord since then, and I could deal with it if they went that direction in the show... I still like villains who are just evil for the sake of it. And thanks!

Very good attention to detail having him look exactly likehe did at the end of episode 2, I know so many who wouldn't do that.

That was the intent, I think the only change I did concerning his pose is that in the episode, his arms appear to both be hanging down, it's at an odd angle that primarily shows his face, but I'm not sure Discord could have gotten his arm up to block his face as the statue looks like in mine, but the pose looked really static without moving that arm around a little.

I can see why you would have the statue in your garden. I mean, you would be able to keep a look on him all the time.

Hmm, if you'd leave the sign blank, and vertical, this could become a meme
"Sledgehammer practice - aim for the kneecaps"
"Don't drink from this fountain. Seriously."
"Painter's corner - make him look pretty!"
On your theories, yeah, I mostly agree, though I've seen the theory that Celestia couldn't use the Elements after banishing Nightmare Moon, because she'd lost her best friend by doing that... which is why she needed Twilight and her friends to do it.

When I have to make a choice to go serious or goofy, I find that the little arrow-indicator in my brain always starts to lean over towards the joke. At least this one is funny
And thank you! I've gotten down a pretty decent technique for shadows (when I remember to do them). I've been trying to come up with a good way to shade, and I did really like how it ended up looking on the statue, I appreciate your comments!

Shading is definately something that takes time to get right. I've gotten into the habit of shading any rear legs, behind outstanding items like wings. With Discord I tried to shade the entire thing to almost give him an embossed look.

And yeah, it was an interesting & deep way he "corrupted" Twilight without doing anything to her.

I think Twilight was able to be corrupted due to being in the midst of so much chaos. It's my theory that Discords power can seep into others just from being around him or beingnear those he has corrupted or twisted.

My composition felt a little off initially, and at first I considered drawing in somepony looking up at it, then had the idea of the sign from the old Simpsons episode where they put up the "Caution: Well" sign fifty feet away from the well and in only one direction.
The way he corrupts (or 'Discords', hypnotizes, whatever everypony is calling it) each pony in Part 1 has been called a bit rushed or forced (on purpose for Fluttershy), but if you consider it to all be to his plan to get Twilight, it's pretty masterful.

I like that thought, Discord's very presence creates chaos. Helps redeem the CMC a bit too, they may be naturally chaotic, but Discord's power starting to seep through just pushed them into further fighting.

I loved the new episodes, Discord was pretty much exactly what I was hoping he'd be. But I've actually gotten really good at having no pre-existing expectations. You have way more fun in life if you just let it come to you, instead of building up expectations and being disappointed. Part two was hilarious, heartbreaking, and Star Wars referency all at once, so I was pretty much set for anything I could ask for.

Maybe? My opinion is that Discord is beyond redemption, a force of pure chaos. Of course, that said, it is his nature. He's merely doing what the cosmic order created him to do. Can he be pitied? Absolutely. Even forgiven. I just have a hard time buying the comics and backstories some ponies have done about how he's misunderstood, or shunned. Sometimes, someponies just want to see the world burn. Or drown in rivers of chocolate milk.

well as shown in sonic chaos can be used for good, most people see chaos as just random crap happening when in all actuality it's far more than that, chaos is the essance of progress without chaos everyone and everything would remain still not moveing or changeing, if chaos were to diapear than it would be as if the entire universe was put on pause, I think discords real problem is his lack of controll of his chaos. He just lets it run wild instead of haveing a set goal or a direct flow for the chaos to fallow.

Invidlord In reply to neolight15 [2011-09-27 03:05:58 +0000 UTC]
Lack of control is definitely the issue there, Discord comes out of the gate at 110% crazy, and doesn't really ever dial down (the opposite, actually).

well not eternal the spell is bond to where off eventually, if it was me I would have turn discord into a baby so I could raise him to be a good that way when he finally grows up he'll use his powers to help people rather than makeing random chaos.

Invidlord In reply to neolight15 [2011-09-26 02:21:48 +0000 UTC]
Turning him into a baby and raising him right sounds like a good plan, but I maintain that he IS chaos. He must exist as a counter to Harmony, Yin and Yang. Unchecked, Chaos goes too far, but I imagine his very existance, even in the form of a statue, causes chaos to bubble up everywhere in some small form (parasprites invading, dragon's roosting nearby, or amazingly ill-conceived rock opera's for the school talent show).
In a world without chaos, there is no change. In a world without harmony, there is no stability. Both are necessary to maintain a world, to some extent, and so ironically, chaos and harmony must coexist in harmony. Perhaps his stone prison isn't complete imprisonment, but a restraint upon his physical form, to keep him from annihilating everything.

Actually, you're right! I just realized! Discord is only kept imprisoned by the Elements of Harmony, meaning that if the Mane6 die, which they will, by old age if nothing, he can get free. They're regular ponies, not immortal princesses. They aren't going to live forever, they'll just have a regular lifespan. Suddenly Discords imprisonment seems a lot more bearable.

I like the idea of the elements being almost entities unto themselves, only presenting themselves to those who are most worthy. The Elements passed to the mane six at some point, and Celestia lost her ties to them. Would they pass back to Celestia and Luna eventually? Or would they find new ponies worthy to possess them?

I imagine he's out of the picture, but it wouldn't be too hard to concieve of him getting loose again. Especially if, as you suggest, somepony WANTS to unleash chaos and sets out to free him... Heh, I'll bet for the rest of Season 2, the statue of Discord will just be in the center of Ponyville...

Invidlord In reply to Doppelgangsta [2011-09-25 05:27:02 +0000 UTC]
Well, we do know that he was freed from the statue, Discord could get into/out of the room that had the Elements regardless. So I really think that regardless of the CMC's fight, Discord was breaking free eventually anyway, but a matter of time.
I guess keeping him out in the statue garden, at least you know immediately if he breaks free... you toss him somewhere weird or distant, and who knows how long he can act and build strength before Celestia would even be aware Discord was free. Of course, Discord strikes me as the kind of guy who'd immediately brag to Celestia about it anyway, but the principle remains, from Celestia's point of view anyway. Discord is Discord, he doesn't need his actions to make sense once he's free.

Hehe, very amusing
You did a nice job on that statue.
I do have two concerns, though: the first is that, because of how the tree is placed, it looks like it should be in the foreground, but it's going behind the statue.
The second is, since you gave the statue a shadow, it's kind of strange to not give everything else a shadow, as well.
Nice job, though!

And built a totally new tree at a much better aspect, along with putting in some shadows under the bushes and the new tree. Thank you for the feedback on that, I appreciate it, I really need to push myself to not just half-flank the backgrounds when I do them, and stuff like that is good to hear, and good practice.
