Lol, I know. I still feel like I should give you a Thank You gift!
Actually, the look on Arnold's face inspired me to write another one in that little short series. I inspired you with the music, and in turn, you inspired me with this.

That's a beautiful compliment. Thank you very much, it means a lot when people say that. Being inspiring is more that I ever hoped for.

Even for a rough WIP I can pretty much tell what's happening. You did a great job just outlining the expressions that I'm already feeling nervous about what she's written to him. It seems bittersweet, judging by his sentimental stare and her depressed affect... but (sing along!) maybe I'm just reading way too much into it.
Adding the color splashes does a great job of clarifying the shapes from the rough lines. Now I'm anxious to see what ~ironbutterflies is going to do with it.

This is based on my two little short stories (Struck Speechless and Sealed With A Kiss) which are inspired by the defunct Patakis show (where Arnold would write Helga letters, but she had a difficult time writing him in return).

It's one of her fics. And you never read too much into it! You always get it!

i'm not a very good artist I'll openly admit that...but what's with all the lines? is that how your suppose to draw? if so...I'm doing it all wrong then. lol

Oh, no. I'm a pretty messy person. And when I work directly with Andre without having drawn it previously in my sketchbook. My work gets even more messy. XD And every artist has their own way of doing it.

Yes, I can't wait to start going to classes to learn Animation because honestly...I'm the type of Artist who can draw something I see, not copy but it's more like...
Well...
Once I asked my cousin to grip her hand on her soda can, I drew it (it's in my D.A) and my monster is holding a dead bunny in his hand...
That's what I mean by drawing something I see. I can draw but I really do need some guidance and practice to become an Animator

It's called using reference
I use reference to, I look at things to know how to draw them. If you copied it would be called tracing.

YourEveryDayMia In reply to InvisibleDeath [2010-07-22 06:51:17 +0000 UTC]
That is true, I hate doing that because someone pointed out that a true Artist doesn't need a reference.

ironbutterflies In reply to YourEveryDayMia [2010-07-22 19:54:48 +0000 UTC]
Oh brother! Whoever said that is a showoff or an idiot! Even "true" artists need a reference every now and then (be it in the form of a model, a mannequin, or a picture).
Lol, using Greg Land (he works at Marvel Comics) as an example, I'm pretty sure he references porn because a lot of his work has ORGASMFACE. Seriously! Actually, I've heard he is a porn aficionado.

Ha,ha,ha. Well we are learning. And I think what they meant it's tracing. People who trace are NOT artists.

That's true, I remember my ex boyfriend use to say "if you can trace, then you can draw"
I'm pretty sure that isn't true since my dad traces but he still draws stick figures LOL

Usually an artist starts out with a blue lead pencil (easier to erase the lines) before they use ink/Photoshop/etc for the finished project. Those lines just give you a general idea of proportions, positions, and whatnot.
(Which is why my proportions are off on my art because I have a short attention span and tend to forgo doing that when I draw.)

YourEveryDayMia In reply to ironbutterflies [2010-07-22 04:56:36 +0000 UTC]
Oh I see, then I am doing it wrong because I use a normal pencil or the mechanical one. Plus I only use the lines whenever I draw Helga's face because she's so hard to draw for me but I am getting better...not the best...but I'm getting there.

ironbutterflies In reply to YourEveryDayMia [2010-07-22 05:23:12 +0000 UTC]
Eh, there is no "wrong" way of doing it. I use regular ol' 2B pencils, myself (and a LOT of erasing, lol). The blue pencils are just something you can use to help you when you draw; they aren't a necessity.

ironbutterflies In reply to YourEveryDayMia [2010-07-22 19:47:32 +0000 UTC]
Nah, just years of practice, art classes, and then of course, a family full of cartoon artists. I'm more of a traditional artist (pencils, paints, charcoal). As much as I love animation, I don't have the patience for it.

Ah I see, well I want to become an animator, I've been dreaming of it since I was four years old. However I have family who do not support me in my career choice, of course I'm starting college soon to study for Animation so hopefully I can get better at my artwork.

ironbutterflies In reply to YourEveryDayMia [2010-07-22 20:12:14 +0000 UTC]
I understand that. My own father told me to become a teacher or something and work on my writing on the side (a la Stephen King). I worked as a teacher's aide in high school and found out how much I hate it, so no thanks.
As for getting better, all I can say is study a lot of different styles and keep practicing your own. I know everyone's heard it, but practice really does pay off. You should see the stuff I did in school when I was still drawing every day for my advanced art class. One hundred times better than now (when I'm really out of practice).

YourEveryDayMia In reply to ironbutterflies [2010-07-23 01:51:25 +0000 UTC]
That's true and I guess I really should do more practicing! I am breaking away from my family much to their dismay but it is something I've always wanted to do but now I wonder if I'm too old to do it now...you know.

How old are you? It's never too late to do anything in life! My mom went to college and graduated the same year I graduated. Same goes for my oldest brother; he's 42 and returning to IU to become a counselor. He's been back to school several times because he keeps changing his mind (he has degrees in law, music, engineering, and philosophy)!
I know what it's like to think you're too old to do something. My plans for myself in high school were to have won the Writers Of The Future Contest by the time I was 22 and working at Marvel or Heavy Metal Comics by the time I was 25, but I had children. I even went to college with the intention of becoming a journalist and instead majored in Japanese! Life is full of change. If you want to be an animator, do everything you can to become one!

Fairy-Slayer In reply to YourEveryDayMia [2010-07-22 02:53:45 +0000 UTC]
For most artists people start sketching with light pencil (traditional) or a "roughing" layer (computer) until they get the lines they want; then they darken the good lines and erase the strays that aren't needed anymore. After that they refine the lines more, darken, erase, repeat...
It can take a while to "find the right lines."
I've spent hours just lightly dragging the H6 and H4 pencils around on a piece of paper before I've laid things out enough to bring out the darker pencils. There's a lot of erasing involved, and sometimes I've left so many tracks in the paper that I couldn't hand-ink it directly β then I'd use a light table to ink the back and then flip it after scanning. (Well, I did that before I had the tablet anyway.)
Working with vectors (the "pen tool," etc.) is a different animal altogether, but that doesn't apply to anything hand-drawn.

Well thank you for explaining that, after I wrote my comment I felt a bit worried you would take it the wrong way. I'm trying to improve my own drawing skills, I'm going to buy a Tablet so I'm excited about that. It will be my first one so yay. Anyway thank you for taking the time to explain this all to me, I understand now how to do it...mean I do erase a lot in my paper but I never had as many lines as you but then again you draw much better then me so I can see why lol.
