Final Fantasy II: Twisted Cast
SO, what do I mean with "Twisted Cast", well... in order to explain this I have to go back over 10 years ago to a little fanfiction I started writing back in 2007 and is still ongoing (with a hiatus of little over !4.5 years!, which I am working on breaking in the immediate future...)
This fanfiction is named "Twisted Fantasy" (you can find the link in my main page and some character art in the Final Fantasy folder of my Gallery). The premise behind Twisted Fantasy is to be a retelling of the Final Fantasy VIII game story with a twist: most of the characters of the game have been gender-bent (turned male when they were female and vice-versa).
Ok, so if the fanfiction is about Final Fantasy VIII, why am I doing the Final Fantasy I cast in opposite genders you ask..?
Well, what brought this up was actually a review from one of my most loyal readers and reviewers. As I re-read my story accompanied by each chapter's reviews (so I would get in the mood and spirit to resume writing), I came across a curious little one. In it, it is mentioned that I should consider applying this premise to other Final Fantasy games, like 7, 9 and 10, as that could turn out cool. Well, I don't remember what I replied at the time, but truth is I had already considered it, had sketched some character concepts and even imagined a few scenes off several twisted scenarios and not only from Final Fantasy 7, 9 or 10, but every non MMO numbered Final Fantasy game out at the time.
As a little bonus for being reminded of all those characters I designed years ago, I decided to rework on them and post them here because... well, why not..? I originally thought of only drawing the main protagonist "twisted" version, however the very first game posed a complication where there is no actual main protagonist but you can choose 4 characters out of a possible 6 different class roster which are, and in the order above:
- Red Mage: Able to use lower level magic together with physical attacks; a "jack-of-all-trades. Not the class itself, but the idea behind the class always made this one of my fave classes in the franchise. I believe this is because my first Final Fantasy was actually Final Fantasy VIII. Despite each character having something of a unique class, with unique weapons and limit breaks (special attacks available when you are in a pinch), every character could cast magic in addition to their physical attacks (as it also happens in Final Fantasy VII). As this was my first Final Fantasy (and one of my first PC games together with Tomb Raider and Broken Sword...), the idea of actual classes escaped me and I only understood them clearly when I played Final Fantasy IX (and haven't finished it yet....... don't hit me...) and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance... All this to say, I always imagined the Red Mage of my Twisted Cast as the main protagonist and she was actually the only one from the first Final Fantasy game that I sketched (with a somewhat more elaborate design, for the Red Wizard upgrade ^^ ), so you may noticed in her a few more details than in the others which only now have I thought up...
- White Mage: Designated healer and with poor physical stats. White Mage was the only class, from the 6 to be considered, being taken by a female character in the original game. This was most likely because the character was a healer, not a fighter or physically aggressive. Truth is, as I realised after drawing this and deepening my research, if you look at the 8-bit image of the White Mage and White Wizard, it could easily be female or male as the original design lacks sufficient detail to be 100% sure of its gender. Since then, in the remakes and further art and even posterior games, the part of the White Mage has been mainly taken by female characters. I am ok with this and following up, making the White Mage the only (clearly identified) male in the group (I will elaborate later ^^ ).
- Fighter: Mostly and later referred as Warrior or Soldier, he's the physical powerhouse, with high physical attack and defense; designated leader and the closest thing to a "tank". The Fighter was the first one that I sketched for this cast, basing myself on the original character design for the original game for the color scheme and general design, with a few necessary additions to the lack of detail of the base material (you can check them here: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia… ). As the characters of the original Final Fantasy I lack any personality, I always envisioned the Fighter as the one in the 8-Bit comic strip which was popular among fans back in the day... I have no idea of where to find it now, tbh, but it portrait the Fighter as the happy-go-lucky, more brawn than brain (basically, an idiot) that only cared for swords and adventuring and didn't care about odds or plans or pretty much anything else but swinging his sword against something and everything that moved... if you never read the comic, I highly recommended, it is hilarious... Cloud from Final Fantasy VII even has a cameo there where he is crushed by his rediculously large sword....... ANYways, moving along...
- Black Mage: Master of destructive magic, with low physical stats. The Black mage's gender has always been an even more ambiguous than that of the White Mage since you never see his face, he wears a black mask almost as ig he has a black bag over his head with 2 holes for eyes... In the aforementioned 8-bit comic strip, he is a psychopat who just loves to burn things, monsters and even people, killing indiscriminately and even burning the Fighter on several occasions. He has an obsessive crush on the White Mage even though she constantly refuses his advances, which makes him burns stuffs... It's funny banter and a whole lot of laughs ^^
- Thief: Average physical stats with high avoidance, has the ability to steal items from mobs. His name could not be more self explanaroty. He (in this case: She) is a thief, he steals things to sell for gold. There were items one could only get by having a Thief in the party do their thing. Though he was only initially useful to steal things at first, with the upgrade to Ninja, he'd usually get the Dual Wield ability allowing him to equip two main weapons which made it a stronger character ^^.
- Monk: Strong(if not the strongest) attack with the focus ability allowing a stronger followup attack (if I'm not mistaken) and unarmed combat. I don't know if the Monk character was overly used nor do I know of any particularly special benefit from having him in the party... I didn't play with him in the game nor did I imagine him in the party in both my Gender-bender FFI story or the Irisa story... But a woman kicking ass and punching your face in is always cool in my POV
Geezus! This turned out longer than I thought... better wrap it up before I get going again... -_-
I do not own Final Fantasy I

Well, I promise to upload it before the end of the month ^^ Just missing a bit of text and then a general review of the whole... there are a few parts I'm not completely happy with...
And lol.... for a chapter ultimately about a side quest.... I believe it's my longest chapter to date... -_-
Been lazing a bit with drawing this week... made a few sketches, but wasn't happy with any of them enough to publish... will try to do the Twisted Cast for FF3 or maybe one of the Irisa's for next week...

as one youtube once said when the world is in peril its time for side quests!!
Also funnily enough over the years I got a 'twisted' version of my oc self that I eventually turned into a shotgun wielding magic girl www.deviantart.com/srgntdrew/a…

Lol and so true... and this chapter turned out SO big, especially considering its about a Side Quest... I might have to split then next one I have planned so it doesn't get as long... It's already on ff.net, btw ^^ Hope it does not disappoint... I actually intended to link the Twisted Fantasy - Lanara Statue at the end of the chapter, but wasn't able to finish it before the end of the month and I really didn't want to pass on January without publishing...
The Chapter and other stuffs are some of the reasons why I haven't posted more of the Twisted Cast drawings... at the moment, working on a different Twisted Cast, actually... Here's a sneak preview I have a feeling you'll enjoy... Zanya - Remake
In addition to that, the magical girl twisted version of your OC self looks pretty cute ^^ Hmm.... we might have to talk about the other Srgnt Drew - How to Bust Up an Iron Clad ... Do you have or can you make a profile for him? As I'm drawing the ENTIRE Twisted Fantasy cast, I will eventually want to draw him and I want to draw him without the helmet too... (Also, if I'm writing him in the story... Which, so you know, I fully intend on doing, I'm gonna need more info on him ^^ )

hmm I don't have a profile for him and I have not given it to much thought but I am sure we can work something out.
Also here is the best pic I currently have that someone did of my male oc self sta.sh/02fik4dc0rzc or we could even go with the female version to go with the idea behind twisted aspect as well.

That sounds like it will be fun so I wish you luck on that! Also I will plan to both replay FF8 and reread Twisted Fantasy again in the near future to help me brainstorm a few possible ideas for my characters cameo and then add more details after making the final selection

Awwww, you honor me ^^ Took me nearly a week when I re-read everything...
I actually do have FF8 on Steam... guess I'm too lazy to pick it up and dedicate myself hours to playing it... I do play Final Fantasy XIV and Gunbreakers are coming next expansion, so that might actually give me ideas for battles
Boys be done, btw Twisted Fantasy 8 - Remake
