Description
This rifle belongs to Ask'raah, the kobold gunslinger character played by one of my friends in a Pathfinder game. This rifle was pieced together by Ask'raah from mismatching spare parts, which is why the materials are so inconsistent. As this is a gun designed for a creature significantly smaller than a human, I decided to make it a carbine, which would make it easier to use and carry. This rifle is a custom design of my own, combining elements of the Ferguson Rifle, Sharps Rifle, M1 Garand, and Jezail. The stock shape is heavily based on the M1 Garand. The rifle is a breechloading flintlock like the Ferguson, but has a mechanism more akin to that of the Sharps, and the sights are based on a design used in Jezail rifles, with a V-sight and a peephole sight that flips up with multiple holes zeroed in for different ranges.
This is version 1.0 because I hope to eventually learn how to use Substance Painter and come back to this piece to give it a more battered, well-used look.
Making this model was very fun, but took forever. There are a lot of little parts with weird shapes that I had to ft together, plus I had to do a significant amount of research to figure out how all those parts worked. I don't think I'll be making any more firearms for awhile. I need a break!
Made in Blender Cycles.

So a falling-block rifle invented during an era where flintlocks are present (meaning it's probably a little early for the time period), with range-adjustable iron sights, in itself implying some serious rifling work inside the barrel for that to be useful, double-set hunting-style triggers, topping all off with a nice customized snaphance in the shape of a dragon's head?
Tsk, yeah, the inconsistency of the parts really seems to be hindering the capabilities of that poor little kobold .Β
A real fun design though .Β

I'm glad you appreciate it!
I tried to stay within the realm of the possible, drawing inspiration from real guns like the Jezail and Ferguson Rifle. It's definitely a one-of-a-kind custom design, but not impossible for the time period so far as I can tell. Definitely not the sort of thing you could mass-produce economically, though.

...but yeah make no mistake I think it is a really nice and unique design

Oh, those were on Jezails. I modeled mine directly on a Jezail's sights. They made for excellent sniper weapons (for their day, anyway) and gave the British quite a headache.
The only thing on this rifle I borrowed from a future era is the lever-driven breech block - the only breech-loading flintlock was the Ferguson, which was moved by a screw.

Really? What era Jezail did you draw from? Jezails were in use in some shape or form from way in the medieval times until very near to the modern day.Β
Ahh, that'll do it.Β

This flintlock Jezail has two peep sights for different ranges, and was my original inspiration. I also found a Jezail with a flip-up multi-range peep sight like the one I have on this one, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Aaaahh. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, Jezails are hardly standardized.Β

Certainly not. *Almost* everything you put in would be appropriate for a flintlock-era weapon if not just a little on the advanced or at least super expensive side. The only thing that I think really would not have been around yet is those range-adjustable sights, though even that Iβm not really certain of.

Nice work! The detail in the flint holder and the whole action is great! Whan you have alot of metallic reflective parts you need to use HDR's with detail so that the reflective parts have something to reflect.

Thanks! I'll see what I can find! Lighting is definitely my weakest suit.

you got a ton of free HDR's online just google it. There are alot of them.
This one is the best one by far:Β hdrihaven.com/

I'm definitely aware of them! To be honest, I find HDRI's based on the real world to be lacking in contrast and detail, so I often just use an ordinary image with lots of detail and contrast and lower the saturation.

They behave differently, propper HDR imagesΒ have alot more information in them then standard image formats. Look up Andrew Prices and Alexander Gleb's tutorials on it.
