Description Another trip to the hilly area with aged trees. This time, I went during the sunset. The tree was red before I put it on the computer. The picture is not very edited! The only post-processing adjustment I made was with curves, making it contrastier (brought out the grass a little bit, made the white sky whiter).

Pentax *ist DL
Pentax 18-55mm
Polarizer
Grad ND filter (cokin p121)
Vivitar 285HV to brighten grass in foreground

Wow!
I love the colours in this.
I wish I knew more technical terms and such so I could go on and on about how much I love this shot haha. But I know next to nothing, so I'll leave it at I love it, and am for sure going to try and convince my parents to let me buy this print haha.

WOW! That's awesome, I would appreciate it beyond words if you would get a print of this! When I saw it on my whole computer screen, I was thinking "wow, what would this look like as a 20x30-inch print?" because it looks really nice when it's blown up!

the-tired-leaf In reply to isaacster39 [2007-09-04 20:43:54 +0000 UTC]

No problem
The only obstacle I've got to overcome is my parents haha. But Christmas and my birthday are coming up in a few months, so I'm sure I could probably squeze it out of them
I completely believe you about it looking nice blown up. I think any size print of it would still look nice though lol.

Once again I'm really liking it, seriously. I think it turned out great! And I really want to get me a grad ND filter but I should wait til birthday/christmas because I found a couple of lenses I want to buy, heh.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

isaacster39 In reply to rjywvVSpcFNeqKks [2007-08-29 22:00:56 +0000 UTC]

hey thanks man!! anad thanks for the fave
the grad ND filter is like the best filter ever made. get the cokin system, if you're going to get one. (there's pretty much no other affordable option). i have the p121. i got the adapter, holder, and filter for $25, but the filter was used. i think filters are one of those things that are perfectly okay to buy used. as soon as i go back to the camera shop, i think i'll get an orange filter (and whatever else they have for cheap! )
what lenses were you thinking of? because i mean, this whole system will be no more than like $30-$40 WITH a filter, all new. and obviously a lens will be much more than that
and no, don't wait till your birthday, because then whoever is buying you stuff is going to think "i'm getting him filters AND a lens?". sounds like more than just "i'm getting him a lens". haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rjywvVSpcFNeqKks In reply to isaacster39 [2007-08-29 22:54:09 +0000 UTC]

Hey no problem

Yeah, I think the only way the grad ND ones work is with cokin, isn't it? Because if it was used with threaded you would screw it in crooked haha. An orange filter? O.o what does that do? Just help with sunsets or somethin?

Haha I could buy the filters myself. And here... [link] seems like a nice priced very wide angle to me, and here's a cheaper one that seems like a nice started telephoto for the price [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

isaacster39 In reply to rjywvVSpcFNeqKks [2007-08-30 02:32:02 +0000 UTC]

haha yeah, pretty much everybody uses cokin. but there are some other brands and such. i think singh-ray has some grad nd's, but obviously not as popular (or cheap!) yeah, would help with sunsets and such, and also add a different effect when converted to black and white

yeah, if you can find the money to get the 10-20, GO FOR IT! it's an AMAZING lens! it's actually the #1 lens on my wishlist right now, but they don't make it for a pentax mount, so i'll have to settle for a 12-24 umm i think i'd advise away from that telephoto. you can get a sigma (much more trusted than quantaray/sunpak) 70-300 f/4-5.6 telephoto that will focus to 1:2 for like $130. or tamron's 70-300. i'd have no problem getting a quantaray/sunpak flash or tripod or accessory or something, but i wouldn't get a lens, just because i'd rather play it safer. but who knows, maybe it's better than i make it sound! (i still reccomend a sigma or tamron though )

rjywvVSpcFNeqKks In reply to isaacster39 [2007-08-30 13:07:59 +0000 UTC]

12-24 is nice as well

Yeah I was asking if I could do the same thing I did for my camera... like get the lens for my birthday AND christmas.

I saw tamron's 70-300 for 300-400 bucks, that one looks really nice but still the one for 150.. i don't know haha. and I have no clue what focus to 1:2 means XD You know a lot more about lenses than I do >.<

Oh, and I looked at the cokin filter holders and shit, but NONE of them are able to handle a 10mm focal length without vignetting it looks like. Hm...

and I would be using it with that 10-20mm lens haha. How do I know which I should get then? the A series could work, but a lot of vignetting, the P series would work, but would also have a lot of vignetting, the Z PRO or whatever series would work, and have less vignetting but still some, and even the X series says it handles up to like.. 15mm focal length vignetting-wise

isaacster39 In reply to rjywvVSpcFNeqKks [2007-08-31 00:59:59 +0000 UTC]

ahh, good choice! combine them. never ceases to please the parents

i think tamron has 2 70-300's: a good one and a bad one haha. i was talking about the one you can get for $130. anyway, you make the choice. its not my lens!

yeah, none of them can handle a 10mm with a holder, but if you just put your camera on autofocus and handhold the filter directly in front of your lens, it'll be fine. that's actually what i do all the time. i dont even have a holder/adapter that will fit my 18-55! haha

get the p series. you can find those filter anywhere, they're by far the most popular. on, say, adorama.com's used department, there are like 30 p series filters and 1 x series? i have the p series, and for me it's the perfect size

oh, and to focus to 1:2 means very close focusing with 1:1 (true lifesize macro) you can make out hte pixels on a computer screen, without blowing the picture up. with 1:2, it will focus very closely! seeing as you don't yet have a macro lens, if i were you i'd get the sigma 70-300/4-5.6 APO macro 1:2

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rjywvVSpcFNeqKks In reply to isaacster39 [2007-08-31 01:37:48 +0000 UTC]

ew @ autofocus >.< Couldn't you just manual focus then hold the filter in front? Shouldn't mess with the focus should it?

the p series filters? or holder? is size the only difference between the series filter-wise? And yeah so what you have is the 121 Grad ND grey?

heh yeah I do need a macro lens

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

isaacster39 In reply to rjywvVSpcFNeqKks [2007-08-31 02:55:06 +0000 UTC]

that's actually exactly what i do. i almost never use autofocus yeah, the filters are different as well as the holders and adapters. x series is completely different than p series in almost every way, size-wise.
and if you do get a macro lens, get the sigma 50mm/2.8 1:1 lens. it's great!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rjywvVSpcFNeqKks In reply to isaacster39 [2007-08-31 13:23:31 +0000 UTC]

Heh. Yeah that sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro or whatever you told me to look at looks like what I'll start with for tele/macro. around 170 bucks

And as for holding the filter out in front, what if you move a lot XD ANd what if you want to do a long exposure xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

isaacster39 In reply to rjywvVSpcFNeqKks [2007-09-02 04:34:46 +0000 UTC]

yeah, those are some of the cons of it. but i have had no problem just holding it
