Description
Hades from Greek Mythology, Yama from Hindu Mythology and Osiris from Egyptian mythology!I was reading the Mahabarata for uni and I was so inspired by the description of Yama being clothed in yellow as I usually associated death Gods with darker or duller colours. So I decided to do an illustration of a few Death deities to see how they differ from one another! I had a lot of fun with this one, especially drawing Yama

You managed to modernize the looks of the old painting/Hieroglyph/tapestry/whatever art styles these guys are usually are in, which is just looks amazing!Β Β

Thanks
I didn't know a lot about Egyptian mythology before I worked on Osiris so I tried to stick closely to Ancient depictions of himΒ

Excellent work! Love the use of contrasting colors and the captivating glow on Yama as well. I also like how you incorporated elements of the ancient 'flat-style' you'd see on pottery and cave paintings.
In Hinduism- to me they always saw death as a transformation/reincarnation than an 'end all' so probably likewise with Yama's more pleasant depiction.
Also white is worn for Hindu funerals instead of black like most cultures.Β
I used to draw lots of of Hindu themed artwork, I truly slacked off lolΒ
Your piece is definitely inspiring! Keep up the hard work!Β

Thank you so much, what a lovely comment Yama was definitely the most fun to colour! I based his outfit mainly this illustration of him ->Β upload.wikimedia.org/wikipediaβ¦
Oh, that's interesting, thanks for letting me know about those details. I love how much you can infer about a culture's attitudes towards death based on their depiction of death deities.

You're welcomeΒ Β
Inspiring illustration on the link too Β
What's interests me too is that every detail from color to hand gesture (mudras) has a meaning behind it.Β
My knowledge is limited, but the Hindu Classical Arts are heavy on color/sound/yoga therapy.
I have Hindu heritage from my mom side so grew up around some of the culture.
Yea you're right, depictions of death deities says alot about a cultureΒ
