Ooooh that gives me ideas.

There's an old lumberjack legend here in the States called a "Hide-behind."  It was a story told by loggers about a critter that likes to hunt people, its gimmick being that it hides behind trees when you try to look for it.  If you aren't looking around or aren't careful when out in the woods it'll get you and eat you.  I'm now imagining a fantasy wild west critter that is basically composed of hides, and literally "hides" behind them.

It's actually been a rather helpful obsession.  I occasionally frequent certain subreddits like r/worldbuilding that discuss a lot of stuff like that, and one thing I notice that people tend to not do very often is just discuss ecology in general, so I do my best to pipe in.  It's a lot of fun.
