Wow!
That is a wonderfully complex and structurized drawing.
I like your drawing technique.

Breathtaking complexity--definitely got an Albrecht Durer look to it. The gossamer of the wings is wonderfully done, and the overall care and love of detail and form is striking. "Wow" seems appropriate.

Wow, thank you for that. I do not have anything against getting compared to DΓΌrer.. haha. No, seriously, thank you so much. I am so glad to hear you like it. What is the "gossamer"?

faile35 In reply to IT-Hammar [2009-02-05 17:19:38 +0000 UTC]

"Gossamer" is an adjective used to describe something thin and delicate, like spider's silk or even filmy, gauze-like, translucent fabric. In this case, I love how you've made her wings appear mostly transparent, very thin, very delicate, and very beautiful. Throw all that together, and you have truly "gossamer" wings. You're quite welcome.

Ohhh, I see. Very cool word. I never heard it before, and I am a word freak, so I enjoyed learning it. And I really appreciate your comment on the wings.. I put off finishing them until the end, because I must admit I was a bit intimidated by my own challenge, but in the end I really enjoyed doing them. Besides, if one can't challenge oneself, where is the fun?

That is a good thing to hear! It was what I hoped it would be like, then. It took enough time, but I am really happy about how it ended up, so it was definitely worth it.

A long time ago they used to make stickers to put into books it was beautiful artwork, your drawings reminds me very much of that style. I wish I could remember what they're called!!

IT-Hammar In reply to kayceeus [2009-03-09 22:14:39 +0000 UTC]

Ohh, yeah, I never had them, but I have seen them many times, and also considered collecting them at one point. I don't know what they are called in english, but in norwegian we call them "glansbilder", which just means shiny pictures..

When I saw this in my inbox, my heart skipped a beat!
How big was the paper you did this on? I can't believe it was A4, there are just too many details for that. It must be bigger... how do you scan it in then?

Back to the artwork: A fairy!!! Those wings are just beyond belief. Just like a dragonflies, all those veins, all those patterns... and somehow you managed to make them clear as well- I can see the bg through the wings. That just blows my mind. What skill... You would think that by now I should be able to expect such incredible feats from you, but you always blow my mind.
I am so glad you drew her in this position, showing how the wings attached to her body- very good blending there.
Oh! I just only noticed the spider! Wow... what a ghostly technique, with the ragged white edges. Very clever.

Really, your whole theme here is so well thought out- the web that connects all, her hair running through it, her wings and antenna, and that gostly spider... Would I be correct in assuming from the title that the spider and its interconnecting thread is the 'train of thought'? Probably not, but that is what this picture is saying to me

I really admire her clothing here, that little detailed fringe of web and the transparency of the cloth. And you managed to shade that little cleft above the lip... wow.

In regards to the tonal range and its composition- beautiful. The dark background, with the lighter web, works well, but having her in the centre with her bright white skin just tops it off.

Gah, look at my rambling. One last thing then: clever dating

WOW.. when I got this comment from you I was as shocked as you where when you saw the thumb, I guess. I was too intimidated by the length and nice words to be able to answer.. haha. Well, I am SO happy to hear you like it! That means a lot to me. About the size, it is A3, so the double of A4. And after I moved for myself I have had no access to a scanner, so I have to get along with my digital mirror reflex camera for any pictures I need to take. So, as all paintings and everything else, this has just been photographed. So on one side you can see the ink is a bit lighter than on the other, which is horrible.. and a lot of detail is lost. I hope to be able to scan it some day and update it, but the picture is pretty okay as it is now. It gives the drawing enough justice for me to dare to show it here.

About the wing, the back wing was the part that took the most time before I dared to do.. I kept staring at it every time I drew, terrified to get started on it, knowing that i wanted it to be transparent. However, in the end it worked out! I just got myself together and did it!

Spiders.. I don't know if you noticed all the spiders, but there are three. One on each side, and one in the lower left corner (this one is a lot less visible than the others though). I liked the fuzzyness they got from the effect I decided on using. About its thread "of thought", you could interpret it that way. For me the spiders are symbolizing fear and challenges (I don't like spiders) that are getting you caught. Everything happening around the dragonfly is the good and bad of life, and she is sitting there musing on this rapture of things happening. This intense pleasure and joy despite the fears and challenges that are there. That nothing can scare her even though things are hard, in a way. I hope this makes any sense to you

And glad you like the dating. I love roman numbers, and i think it fit the style here. And since I started it last june or july, I figured it would only be right to write both years on it. Again, thank you so much for your fantastic comment!

*goes back and looks at other spiders* Oh that makes sense now that I know you hate spiders!
And good on you for just getting into that wing and doing it- I know that scared feeling. I have this lineart I created several years ago that I have just been too scared to colour because I like it so much

Good work, Ingrid. I do prefer your drawings. For painting, have you tried 'Mische' [link] technique?
Cheers

Haha, I get the feeling that a lot of people do. I really like my drawings as well, because I really like doing them. The thing is I really want to become good at painting too, because I love the medium so much, and I am completely in love with some oil paintings when I see them. I like the mische technique, although I am not too keen on using it myself. There is just something so great about oil paint that makes me want to "tame" it, and try to make it work with me, no matter how much work it is going to take before I get there. I love the challenge of it. To me it is a challenge, at least. I am really glad to hear you like this drawing, my friend. Your opinion means a lot to me. Thank you.

You have no idea how glad I am to hear that, Tassos. The fact that you like it means very much to me. Glad you like the signature on this one. I quite like it myself. As you might have noticed, I have signed it with two years. I don't know if you remember when I showed it to you when I started it last summer, but I did.. and it has taken a whole lot of time before I finally pulled my act together and finished it. I don't even know if I think it is really finished now! Ahh, but I am looking forward to start another ink drawing. It'll be wonderful!
