Description
I managed to take some better photos of my little Dobbyand she got to go outside for the first time, which was very appreciated
and my mother loves her to bits and pieces, but thinks that she is the ugliest thing she has ever seen XD
(for those of you who are wondering, she is hairless due to a genetic mutation, in a litter or 10, she is the only one who is abnormal, all of her siblings have long fur, and both of her parents are normal)

Why is she furless? Is she meant to be like that or is she sick?

she was born with a spontaneous genetic mutation

He looks so cute, his wrinkled skin makes him look like an armadillo! but it is sad that she does have no fur because it would be harder to keep warm.

and she looked a bit like an armadillo if she really squished herself to a ball, but mostly she just looked like a mutant kangaroo

I look forward to seeing more of her. I am a fan of the naked animal in any case. I have three chinese rested dogs and have had a pair of hairless rats some years ago. This is the first time I've seen a hairless rabbit and I think it's just too cute. Love the little sweaters you've made for her! It's hard keeping naked animals warm. i know because my cresties always shiver, even at 70 degrees, so they all have an extensive wardrobe!

I also love most hairless animals, and that is one big reason why i chose to take her in when nobody else wanted her.
I've had a bunch of hairless rats in the past, but have never seen a hairless rabbit before, and probably never will see another like Dobby.
she is as far I know the only hairless rabbit here in Sweden, although there was one born a couple of years ago, but sadly he died very young
Dobby doesn't really freeze (yet)Β but she needs protection from the sun since she is allergic to most sun screens (even those meant for babies)
so she have to wear her little sweaters outside so that she doesn't get sunburned
but sadly its very hard to find clothes that fits a little rabbit, so I have to find new ways of making her sweaters that fit her special...shape

I've been seeing more and more photos of hairless animals. The last one I saw was a guinea pig. They're all cute, like little old wrinkled men! As to the clothes, my dogs wear clothes for sun protection as well. They are all pale when winter is over and sunburn easily, so I have to be very careful with them when the weather gets warm enough to let them go naked.

its both good and bad that they breed new kind of hairless animals, good for enthusiasts that knows the kind of care they need, bad for people who get them just because they look cool, and the animal ends up being mistreated or doesn't gt the proper care it needs
(I've seen how bad it can be when a person gets a hairless rat without caring to look up what sort of special care it needs)

I have to agree. In fact the whole pet industry is a lesson in why selling animals for profit is a bad idea. Many of the animals commonly available are bought on impulse by people who have no idea what they are really taking on. Our humane societies would not be crawling with abandoned cats and dogs if that wasn't true. And that's just those two, forget about the so called "disposable pets" - all the rodent varieties, fish, birds and reptiles. It makes me crazy.

the whole commercial pet industry is horrible
I bred rats for a couple of years, but made sure that every rat went to an owner that understood the responsibility of having a pat, and never sold any rats to impulse buyers
i used to have an internship at a local pet store, and the owner of that store told me that they were the first store to not stock live animals after they witnessed how horrible the condition of the animals were, and how little the people involved cared, she told me of a live animal delivery truck driver who stomped animals to death if they somehow managed to get out of the boxes, and that she managed to save a gorgeous angora hamster that lived as the store mascot for 3 years after that
if you search my gallery for Oliver, you can see the sad state a hairless rat i got (more like confiscated)
from a friends friend
sadly the state of abuse was too much for him and i had to put him down a year ago

Yes, the pet industry is awful. I have a wonderful lizard I rescued from a pet store where the ignorant clerk was terrorizing the poor thing. After assuring me how vicious the creature was, I insisted he needed to come home with me where he has been a perfect gentleman for the past year and a half. Idiots should be barred from working with animals. In any case, it has become painful to even go into a pet store because I look at the many animals there and know that most of them are headed for even more miserable lives, bought on impulse by people who don't understand what they need, sold by unscrupulous and ignorant dealers who only care about making money. It sucks. Β I did look at your pictures of Oliver. He was SO cute. I'm sorry you weren't able to save him. But at least he knew kindness in his last days.

the pet trade is vicious, and should be carefully scrutinized, or even stopped
I've lost count over how many rats I've rescued from pet stores that had all kinds of sad stories :/
like my little girl Devon who was about 12 weeks old when I got her, and she was pregnant, I have her & her babies a chance for a better life, and she was a perfect rat, and a superb mom, all of her 9 kids were happy, well fed and clean
and went to new good homes, and one of those still lives on, 2Β½ years later

I guess the only thing we can do is save the ones we can, and talk to people, help educate them about what having an animal really means. They are not toys, possessions, things, but living beings with feelings and needs. Bringing them home is the easy part. Giving them what they need is sometimes a lot of work. That's the part the pet stores don't explain well. People bring home an animal on impulse and when reality sets in, they lose interest. Sad. Mostly for the animal.

they don't really exist (yet, i bet people will start breeding rabbits with this mutation soon enough)
but she is hairless due to a spontaneous genetic mutation, the same that developed into the breed Sphynx
she is born out of a litter of normal kits, to normal lion head parents
(technically she is a lion head rabbit)

There is a certain mutation that is called Astrex.Β It causes curly hair, and often when they molt they lose all their fur but then it grows out more curly.Β Do you think Dobby might be like that or has she just never grown in her fur?
π: 0 β©: 1
Itchys-rats In reply to TheWolfKeeper [2013-08-26 14:09:37 +0000 UTC]
well she is 6 months old now, and still has no fur, so I think that Astrex is pretty much ruled out

sadly yes
I will neuter her in the future to prevent more hairless rabbits from being born since I do believe that they need their fur, and I know how much care a hairless rabbit need, and some days regret the choice to take her in

I don't think that they are as wrinkly as Dobby since hairless animals tend to have more loose skin than their furry counterparts
