Is it possible to get the full res version of this map?

Yes, give me some time though, I have to upload them somewhere since they are huge. Β I'll PM you when I've got it all together.

I'd love to take a gander at the full-res version myself.

awesome pictureΒ
i heard that mars 4 billion years ago Mars wasn't thick with red dust, but that was white-colored

Well I didn't make it red, but I've never heard it was white (besides snow maybe).Β  You have any sources for that?Β  Thanks

i think that it could be quartz, very common on earth,or pomice, due or the fact Mars was a very volcanicallyΒ active Β planet,or ChalkΒ
there's even some fan art of mars white(not snow)

Hmm I'll have to look around and too see if there is evidence the whole planet what white and not just that area.

I wish I had a skill to create things like this. What I am doing to create a satellite image of a planet is just putting colours.
I need to learn from you! Really, really nice picture.

Thanks, though your art is way better than anything I could do. We all have our own skills I suppose.

i love this! nice to see that someone has been true to ancient mars' probable topography!!!! any chance of seeing it in higher resolution???

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ittiz In reply to TomIsMad777 [2012-09-07 13:29:19 +0000 UTC]

I accuracy here probably isn't extremely high. I took a regular Mars topomap and erased the features that weren't supposed to exist yet. The cratering is probably quite inaccurate. I do have a much higher resolution version of this image which I used to make this: [link] image. If you really want it I'm sure I can get it to you some how, but I don't want you distributing it.

thanks. i wasnt thinking of distributing it, i just thought it might look nice in a real-time program called "orbiter", which uses hi res images, thats all.

I absolutely love it. It's really nice to see someone pays a lot of attention to science when portraying prehistoric Mars. I also see Valles Marineras still has to form by this period.

I hope I'm not bothering you with these recent comments, but I have one quibble about this map. More of a question really.

When I did my own Mars maps, I left large parts of the Tharsis Bulge bare of vegetation and snow/ice, a lot like your other Mars map. Is it even possible for snow to fall at such high altitude and thin air? I honestly don't know, so I guessed no.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ittiz In reply to 1Wyrmshadow1 [2010-03-04 05:26:47 +0000 UTC]

The altitudes weren't as high back then. Most of the very high mountains had yet to form. Additionally I think that Valles Marineris, which formed during the end of this period, is strong evidence of a giant glacier covering the Tharsis region. This page is where I got most of my data: [link]

Three billion years as I recall. I tried to get it just before Mars' ocean started to evaporate.
