Description
I produced this illustration / digital painting based on a sketch which I created during October '17, as part of the INKtober Challenge. This is the furious final duel between LAPOLAKH the Elemental God of Fire, and the CUETZPALIN NAGUAL, and takes place in NAGUAL, the seventh major chapter of my original fiction story project (that mixes science fiction, fantasy, mythology and especially pre-columbian influences), currently titled IXIPTLA (from the nahuatl, meaning "impersonator"). In this story, this event happens between August-September 2013, on an inhabitable "Haijianese" (Chinese?) colony in the planet Venus, operated by Lapolakh's followers, the nine Yan Hou (a.k.a "Fire Lords"), influential, wealthy and obscure individuals who possess the ability to control fire, among other things, and are pragmatically aligned towards Lapolakh's industrious plan of turning planet Earth into a machine that produce pure, endless stelllar energy. According to him, this is the only way Earth, or other planets (which would follow Earth) would have to stand up against a certain mobile satellite of mass destruction powered by a self-sufficient artificial Black Hole. Venus' colony play the role of warming up Earth and dragging - alongside another artificial satellite, nicknamed "Khepri's barge", named after the egyptian god and one of Lapolakh's previous names - the planets of the solar system closer to the Sun, not to mention accelerating Sun's transformation into a Red Star, and keeping it that way. Surely, this would make Earth inhospitable for most sentient beings, and boil the oceans, but for centuries the generations of Yan Hou and their servants have modified so much in nature, and played as geneticists granting a future for their own allies, turning them into highly adaptable beings that are more kinetic energy than matter. This is just one of the several benefits granted by the manipulation of the hidden element known as Xnobius, that is mined on some places of Earth (like Uku Pacha, in Quntisuyu, Tahuantinsuyu's Central Region. The Republic of Tahuantinsuyu concedes commercial privileges to China, which trades the valuable Darr element, mined on Tibet and Mongolia, in exchange for the quantity of Xnobius they receive). The Yan Hou and Lapolakh are masters of Xnobius, and guard plans for the future of all sentient life in the universe.
The Cuetzpalin Nagual (Cuetzpalin means lizard in nahuatl. In IXIPTLA, it refers to a species. Nagual comes from a nahua concept referring to sorcerers able to transform into other animals, the proccess a.k.a Therianthropy) was once known as the CUETZPALIN PAYNAL, a non-human vigilante and self-proclaimed anarchist who has caused a lot of damage to the status quo and social order between August 2008 and February 2012. The Cuetzpalin Paynal, though, was secretly William M, a young man from Brazil who earned these transformative abilities and super speed by chance. His original goal through his violent actions were liberating animals from the exploitation industry and forcing it to stop, in the proccess reducing human population, and accordingly, hierarchical systems, control and order. In 2011, however, he learned that if he kept using such powers he'd lose access to his original human form and identity, so he sought an alternative power. He used the powers derived from his pact with the Xolotl entity, whose dormant form is the mysterious Nemontemi Stone (Nemontemi means hollow days in nahuatl and refers to the last days of the xiuhmolpilli, feared by the ancient Mexica as days of omens), until he was broken by Huo, the Elemental God of Earth (and a rival to Lapolakh. That's right, the Cuetzpalin is enemy to both gods, and many more). He used the Cuetzpalin powers once again, aware he'd lose his ability to turn human, thus his social identity, relations and life. That wouldn't be bad, though, as despite 18 years old the toll was heavy already, and being a super-fast, feathered, winged, wild reptile couldn't be bad - despite common people would likely try to shoot it on sight, or he wouldn't have basic rights because he's not human (even though it's questionable that human basic rights are respected in a global, late capitalist, fascist borderline society, non-human animal rights are even more disregarded, and that gap is seriously overlooked by most people). After some time, he'd learn that he not only transformed into a Cuetzpalin, but that he actually died when Huo attacked him, and he was merely using his original body (which was transformed, anyway) as a husk, because his true body was merely the Tonalcoatl - a snake-like organ of a Cuetzpalin found on its brain that is its' earliest and latest life stage. It can detach and symbiotically or parasitically attach into other vertebrates, in some cases forming telepathic links with the host or even controlling the host's body, and allowing it to transform into a new Cuetzpalin-like being. In his case, a super-fast Cuetzpalin. In this battle, he's possibly using the body of a previously defeated member of the Yan Hou. Using these deceptive shape-shifting, or rather body-swapping abilities, the Nagual has made his way through the corrupt guanxi (a chinese concept which rhoughly translates as "networking") in order to swipe the entrepeneurs of destruction, who want to accelerate "progress" at the cost of billions of lives, the destruction of the environment, the acceleration of global warming and the enslavement of most for the likes of the few - and keeping it as a painful cycle of destruction and renewal.
Lapolakh and the Nagual, however, do have their similarities. Before stepping back to the fight, "the Nagual" (because he is human no more, he just didn't feel like being called William, and no one would know who he was/is, so to him it didn't make a difference if he was called Cuetzpalin, Nagual, Necoc Yaotl) lived for some time as a wild animal, and experienced hunger and suffering in areas not even manipulated by humans. It made a difference, though, when he was hunt down by mercenaries alongside other native animals who were cosidered as "invading species" and thus "could be eliminated for the sake of the ecosystem". This kind of relation showed him fervently that the interests of individual sentient animals usually clash with those of ecosystems, abstract entities which seem to morally mean more to the humankind. Life, either in the cities or in "nature" (either in forests or in the desert, sometimes "abundance" is merely an illusion) isn't ever balanced, it's never harmonious, unless balance and harmony mean that suffering will always prevail over joy . And despite that's true, that doesn't mean there's nothing one can do to reduce the damage ("reducing damage" doesn't mean fooling oneself with illusions of grandeur, or lying to others in order to make them more comfortable with a harsh reality, or active towards lost causes). In this sense, although Lapolakh and the Nagual do agree there's no balance in life, Lapolakh wants to create a balance (eliminating many in the proccess, let's say, "burn the weak"), while the Nagual just want to keep people, human and non-human alike, from breeding (the contrary of Lapolakh's plan), to focus the attention on those who are rather on those that may be and in the long run, hopefully, end this cycle of misery. That's because, concerning personal identities the Nagual is a closed individualist, and Lapolakh is an open individualist. Lapolakh turns out to seek "paying the Karma debts and start the cycle anew". It's interesting to note that Lapolakh's mortal human form of choice is a buddhist monk, who gives (for high prices) inspirational, spiritualized speeches to industrialists, from mining, oil and energy sectors, all ready to sponsor genocide and slavery for the sake of progress, who merely want to sleep a good night with their minds cleared and their consciousness softened. The Nagual is an animal, and an atheist one, more worried with finding fruits and grains, and eat vegan in a world of misery.
Alas, like before, the Nagual and Lapolakh won't solve their differences by dialogue and reason. There's no other way to change the fate of so many without a good old combat.
