PERSONALITY

[ Cautious ] [ Short-Tempered ] [ Hard-Working ] [ Obeying ] [ Co-Operative ]

Overall Disposition:
Octavia carries herself with a cautious attitude, constantly looking over her shoulder and second-guessing others. Having to leave the only world she's ever known unwillingly, she isn't exactly thrilled to live amongst empire cats now – but her survival instinct is too strong to not want to win their trust. She at least is making an effort to try and fit in, though understandably, not everyone seems to be as keen about it... But Octavia is well aware of the judgement and looks she gets from her empire mates, knowing it would be foolish to think that they'd welcome her with open arms straight away. But as she no longer has her family to lean on, she knows that the next best thing would be to find felines she can trust and depend on. Unfortunately for her, her short-temper often takes her a couple of steps back. Being mistrusting of others' intentions, she tends to come off as snappy, which tends to scare them off. She isn't one that looks for the comfort of being near others. Physical affection is something she grimaces at. But still, she longs to fit in and earn her empire mates' respect.

And if she isn't able to do so by simply existing, she will at least work for it. Octavia has plenty of experience in combat and tracking down prey after all – why not try and make use of it by showing off these skills? She'll go the distance to bring home double the amount of catches as others, or do extra rounds of patrolling if needed. She does best following orders, and loves to have a purpose in her work. She's motivated by the thought of doing the right thing, which is putting her team first. Octavia is far from selfish – her actions are always to aid her faction, and gain their respect. The possibility of climbing up a hierarchy is exciting to her – which is why she most often steps forward for an extra workload. This especially has gained her some sort of respect from the higher ups, as her willingness to work is rather admirable. It's not something you'd expect from her, after all – being on the more stand-offish side and preferring her solitude most of the time, it's surprising to see her wanting to work closely with others, as she knows her strengths best come into play when she knows she can rely on others for support. She's a talented hunter and tracker who strives to pass on her knowledge, hoping to combine her Roman training with the ways of Stone Empire.

Despite her unintentional coldness, it's rather easy to befriend Octavia. She might not be the one to take the first step, though she quickly warms up to others. While she may not act like it, Octavia can't deny that she enjoys to be surrounded by those she calls friends, or even family. The latter is something she misses deeply, thus any interaction that comes with good intentions from someone else aren't taken for granted and usually reciprocated. You'll get exactly what you give – act distrusting and cold towards her, she'll do the same to you. Treat her with kindness and respect, and she'll have your back no matter what.

STORY

Backstory:

Any feline in Rome would be able to tell you about Reyna, one of the city's most revered elite hunters. As she grew older, her owner wanted to ensure her bloodline lived on to guarantee a bright future for the Roman wardens. A business breeding was arranged, and soon, Reyna found herself giving birth to two healthy cubs whom she named Aemilius and Octavia. Although Reyna practically burned with passion for her profession, she felt herself growing much more attached to her two cubs than she had expected. Still, she didn't let them take her focus off her work, which is why the two mostly grew up in the care of their cousin, Ventus.

Octavia grew up surrounded with love from her relatives, whilst learning about the wardens that guarded the city. It was clear to her and her brother that they'd eventually join their ranks, which created a sort of competition between the two of them. Whilst Aemilius and Ventus grew close over the years as they were similar in personality and interests, Octavia always looked up to her mother. The relationship between Reyna and her cubs changed a lot as they became apprentices, adapting a more military-dynamic as the twins strived to win their mother's blessings. To them both, she was what they aspired to be – a respected and well-known member of Rome's society, whose heart belonged to her faction. Octavia especially loved the challenges training brought with it. No hurdle seemed impossible to climb, and the competitiveness between her and Aemilius only made her more eager to go the extra mile.

Not soon after being promoted to hunters themselves, the two set out to retrieve escaped felines, as well as guard the city as a fearsome duo. And while Aemilius seemed perfectly content with where he was standing in the wardens' social circle, Octavia wanted more. She wanted to get to the exact same point as her mother, and worked tirelessly for it. Unfortunately for her, she'd never meet the day she'll get promoted to the ranks of the elite hunters, due to the sudden passing of her owner. It was his son, Claudius Consus, who decided to return back home to Massilia along with the three remaining felines in his household, prompting Ventus to return to his homeland with his two cousins who had never left the city they grew up in.

Expecting Octavia to take this decision lightly would be stupid. It upset her to say the least. Throughout the journey, the feline remained agitated and snappy, causing her owner to punish her by not giving her the same amount of food and attention as Ventus and Aemilius. A stupid mistake that made itself clearer when Aemilius and Octavia attempted the Massilian hunter trials, one healthy and well-fed, while the other was hungering and, to be quite fair, scared. Octavia was constantly on edge, battling her demons and trying her best to somehow get used to these new circumstances. But it simply didn't work. She couldn't help but feel like everything had been ripped away from her. Thus, she wanted to prove herself in her assessment period to leave a lasting impression on the Massilian wardens, hoping to climb up their ranks as quick as she can.

She believed a friendly spar in training would be the right way to go about it. It was late in the afternoon, after an already long day of exercising. But Octavia didn't want to admit that she was tired out. Instead, she picked the one feline amongst the others trying out as well that treated her with the most friendliness, a mountain lion by the name of Iris. She was a softspoken feline who had welcomed Octavia and Aemilius with open arms not soon after their arrival, causing Octavia to warm up to her immediately. She believed she'd be the right cat to face, maybe also because she didn't expect Iris to be as strong of a fighter as she was. For the most part, the spar went as expected, with Octavia taking the upper hand. That was, until a well-calculated move from Iris put her in the lead, throwing Octavia off her game. The unexpected turn of events suddenly made Octavia nervous, and her moves became sloppier. Iris noticed, and reminded her that she could always give up if she needed to – but Octavia's pride and drive to impress the watchful eyes of the others was too big. She kept at it, launching strikes blindly at the mountain lion, until a familiar taste of iron filled her mouth.

It took just one lick of her lips to recognize the taste of blood. She knew it wasn't hers, but she couldn't quite believe that it was Iris' either until she looked up. And there she was, right in front of her, gasping for air as the blood spilled from her neck, causing her to fall back and let out a scream, which soon turned into a gurgling mess. Octavia stood there with horror before the uproar of the audience took her out of her trance, realizing what she had done. She was called a killer, a traitor – luckily the humans were able to intervene before a bloodbath could erupt, saving Octavia's life. Though really, she now wished it was taken from her right there and then.

Everything suddenly happened so quickly. She went straight home, where Ventus greeted her, already having caught wind of what had happened. The dock cat knew that Octavia's brother wouldn't be far off, likely having been alerted about the actions of his sister that would lead to her getting exiled, or worse. Ventus warned her, aware of what came with committing an act so cruel as hers. Octavia begged and pleaded, insisting that she‘d never commit such a gruesome act – to which Ventus could barely muster a smile, knowing how much the sudden change of environments had messed with his dear cousin. As much as she contemplated staying and waiting for her fate to come to her doorstep, her survival instincts were too strong. In the matter of mere minutes, Octavia collected the only thing remaining that was dear to her, and left. Left, without ever looking back. Without knowing what fate the humans had decided for her, or whether or not the wardens would be on her trail.

She didn't look back until she was deep in the woods, in the dark of night. There, she finally allowed herself to breathe and let it all out – all the emotions she had carried with her that day, all the frustration and confusion and sadness. How could she let this happen? Why was she so eager to prove herself? And why didn't she just stop? All of this could've been prevented if she had simply listened to her body. Knew when enough was enough. And to have taken Iris' life, a soul that had only shown her kindness from the moment she had arrived in Massilia... She simply couldn't bear it.

For a long time, Octavia wandered around aimlessly, feeding on carcasses and smaller rodents she caught around the woods, constantly staying alert to anyone who might be after her. How far she went, she didn't know – she had never left Massilia before, after all. Whether she went north, west, or east... She wasn't aware of where she was in the slightest. That was, until she heard the waves crash ashore not far from where she was stood. And for a quick moment, she feared she had wandered all the way back to Massilia. Though the smell in the air was different, almost like back home in Rome... With a newfound power in her paws, she sped up a little, hoping to lay her eyes on the city she missed so dearly – before getting knocked down, and harshly meeting the rocky ground.

Everything was spinning, until she heard the voices of two felines that initially caused a panic inside of her. Once again, she was blindly pawing at what she believed to be hunters that had tracked her down, but upon getting pinned down once more, she realized that they were complete strangers. Their pelt tousled and scent different, much like the feral felines she had encountered on her and Aemilius' raids in the wild. The fear in her eyes was enough to get the attacker to loosen his grip on her and take a step back, allowing the bystander to approach her. He looked... Gentler, greeting her with a small smile as he introduced himself as Rubrum of Stone Empire. Although Octavia had been wandering the woods on her own for several days now, the smell of the city still lingered on her. Stolas, as the other feline introduced himself as, kept his distance – understandably, especially when she told the two about her situation. Both thought it'd be best for her to meet the higher ups, though neither of them could quite believe that she'd have it in her to convince them to join them straight away.

For the first couple of weeks, Octavia was treated as an outsider. She was never alone, constantly supervised by a member of Stone Empire. Their mistrust was something she had expected, and understood – she wouldn't trust a stranger like her either if she were in their position. But her initial plead was clear – why should she still be loyal to the wardens when they would kill her the moment they catch a glimpse of her? There was no possibility of her returning to Massilia without coming to harm. Thus, she sees no reason to try and win back their trust. Although understandably stand-offish, the cats of Stone Empire allowed her to stay, on probation. Any wrong word or move will result in her getting thrown out of the territory by force. Thankfully, Octavia was a smart feline who knew when limits were met. She wasn't going to try anything reckless – and despite an empire being the furthest thing from what she had hoped for, she knew she had no chance at survival on her own. Joining forces with experienced combatants seemed like the best idea. Besides, she craved to be in the company of others. And while she'd never admit it, the wariness of her empire mates is hurting her heart deeply.

As it stands, Octavia is making good progress at fitting in with the rest of the empire. The whispers of her fellow felines regarding her past may not go by unnoticed by her, but as long as she's winning the trust of just one feline... Well, Octavia won't take their kindness for granted.
