your avatar should be taken to the vet too... it appears to be some type of rodent, yet its eyes and mouth are level with each other, possibly indicating wandering face syndrome.

IMHO
Person - not a doll. Shoulder girdle of a living person is much more difficult. If you want to simplify it - see how it makes Bammes. You mislead people when showing them that this is supposedly easy.
The doll has no clavicle or scapula, or muscles. But the man has. And simplifying it is important not to lose the basis of real, human body mechanics.
This is a dangerous oversimplification. When an artist does not understand what happens when a man raises his hands, or when a man pulls his arms forward or backward, or when he is relaxed or has tense in his shoulders.

What is Bammes? O_o "The doll has no clavicle or scapula, or muscles." That's why the "doll" is the sketch or under drawing. Also if you take a look at the skeleton of a real human, the joints in the shoulders are very spherical.

"This is a dangerous oversimplification." That's kind of the point, this tutorial is for beginning artists and this method is actually a great way to start the process of learning anatomy. As for the bit where you said "understand what happens when a man raises his hands" ect. that's completely invalid because nowhere does this say that I would go into that much detail. It's simply showing the basics of female and male chest structures.

Gottfried Bammes is the most famous artist and anatomy teacher. His books is the best for beginning artist.
You can search ebooks or paper books in Internet. Unfortunally most of his book on deutch.

"Doll" has fixed joint and it's bad sample for understanding. There is better way understand human body mechanic without any "cut for beginners".
But my english is poor - take a look at Bammes book.
Glen Vilppu also good, but Bammes is the best.

The whole point of the doll base is to learn that humans aren't all straight lines; that many shapes are used to compose the body. You are entitled to your opinion but I wish you'd stop saying it's a bad example because this is the method I use, and at the risk of sounding cocky, I think I have a good understanding of anatomy.

I know I shouldn't jump into the discussion... AND that this is a bit old comment (at least some months old) but I'd like to say that I agree to some point.
Using spheres for joints is okay, but they shouldn't "fill up" the whole area, the humerus bone has a round edge - that is true, but that doesn't fill up the whole shoulder .This is where you are sending the wrong message for a novice artist - some of them will think the shoulder is one round sphere in shape when it isn't.

However, I don't think that you've ruined 40 000 people's art skills because of that detail. But I do also recommend Gottfried Bammes books, they are incredibly helpful and is also giving a realistic picture of the human body (compared to Hogarths over-defined superhero bodies). You can NEVER have too much resources when it comes to anatomy

Well you see, I do agree with you myself. The only thing is, I'm a comic book artist and I hope when novice artists see this they understand that this style is the basis for a fairly simple yet mostly correct human structure. I never intended for the tutorials to read as "this is human body. this how body look. follow steps you make art magic." Simply put, this is one way to draw a chest and arms but not the only way and not necessarily the most correct. To anyone reading this I also recommend looking at various resources: photos, books, other drawings, and real life especially.

You are right on that point actually. A novice artist need to start thinking simple and easy before they need to learn the latin names of all the muscles (lol jk).

I do both ball-joint and stick skeleton. The skeleton allows me to know where to put the joints in the first place.

finally someone that does the basics the same as me.... xD; I thought I was the odd one out.
So many people use the skeleton, but I find it much easier using the 'ball-jointed doll' method, as you call it. <3

Best trick to find where the nipples go on people (This really works) Have them face forward, then fallow a line down from their earlobes. BAM nipples right there!

IVAMIAM In reply to Pagoda--Leaf [2012-01-15 03:17:14 +0000 UTC]

Guys who are more 'built' or have broader shoulders tend to keep their balance there, slimmer men would probably carry it in their hips, I should have made that more clear.

ChrisHerself [2012-01-14 21:40:55 +0000 UTC]

Don't completely discount the 'skeleton' method of building a base figure--it really helps with making sure that the limb lengths are in correct proportion. The joint-and-ball method is excellent for adding volume but the structure underneath is important too! <3
