Thanks Diego Those were really great times for comics (I mean, what happened to Moore in the last 10 years? Sigh).

I have lost track of Moore's work in the last 10 years, but I recall having read some of his late 90s work, in his "ABC" comics line, and a lot of it (Promethea comes to my mind) was very strong work, some of his finest, I think.

Damn, now that you said this my mind can't stop thinking I didn't fully appreciate it because of the italian translation, and I'll have to get them in paperbacks
I was very unsatisfied by Lost Girls. Got the english volumes, and probably I was expecting too much. I mean, it was fascinating, witty, interesting and original. But erotically it was kind of trite, and lacked, on my opinion, the passion of his other long novels.

I haven't got a chance to read Lost Girls, but I'm interesting to read it at some point-- if only out of curiosity, because I couldn't help but thinking (and this might be a prejudice from my part, I'm aware...) , that it's just so hard to pull a story if one is dealing with erotica or porn. I mean, I figure the reader's interest will probably switch from the story to the... let's say, action scenes among the characters.

Aha, that's true. But though Moore described it as porn, I didn't find it extremely exciting (though ok, it was distracting). You definitely have to read it. Even if I didn't like it, there are so many layers and interesting things, that I think it surely deserves a place in comic history.

I think that it's just so unusual that a writer who made a lot of great stuff like Alan Moore would make a porn project, that I guess that by that fact alone it kind of has its place in comics history. That said, I believe that like I mentioned before, this is more due to the fact that many people (myself included...) would originally have some type of prejudice where we'd go "what kind of cool story would someone be able to make if they are making porn?". So, even though I still haven't read it, and have no idea if I will like it or not, I think it's very nice that Moore would work on a porn, or erotic, project, since there are no reasons, as far as I'm aware, why it shouldn't be a genre as valid as any other one.

Also, apart the additional distractions, what's the difference with superheroes comics: simply that people have sex instead of a fight. Personally I prefer the first
P.S. hey, if you find unusual that Alan Moore writes a porn, you should read about his personal life: he's got a very open-minded sexuality/morality.

True, true... though I guess the thing with porn is that it usually makes one want to unzip their pants, and... you know.
But really, there's no reason why there shouldn't be interesting stories done within that genre, that go beyond as an excuse for a viewer/reader to jack off.
And yeah, I had read somewhere, years ago, that Moore was very open about sexuality/morality. In regards of that, I really didn't find it unusual about Moore in particular, but more about the fact that someone very respected in his field (in this case Moore, but it would be the same if it were someone else in another field) would work on a porn project. But unusual in a good way, because I think it's great, just like it was great when Moore did superheroes, and he made a lot of strong work with a genre that, really, usually falls in people with weird costumes fighting for 200 comic pages.

Ok, enough of defending porn Thinking about that, you definitely have a point. And thinking even more about it, that's probably why Moore failed with Lost Girls. He tried to make a great porn comic without truly understanding the porn medium. I mean, erotic comics may well contain great and multi-layered stories. They're exciting, but if the story is cool you'll follow it anyway. But porn is too distracting (I mean, unless you're an impotent old man - mhmm maybe that was the audience Moore was looking for?
). On my opinion, Howard Chaykin's Black Kiss did a better job with the porn theme. Sure it was soft porn compared to Lost Girls, but he didn't pretend to capture too much of the reader's intelligence, and that's why it worked.

I think if some comics artist would be in legal trouble for drawing something considered "porn", they wouldn't find better lawyers than ourselves.
I had read Black Kiss a long time ago, but I actually didn't like that one-- I think I still have the book, so I might give it a second read at some point.

Ahaha, true Actually, I didn't like Black Kiss either, but for a porn comic it was really good
