Description
Character: GodzillaTribe(s): MudWing/LeafWing/SeaWing
Media Name: Godzilla
Type of Media: Movies
Reference Picture(s): Here's a sta.sh folder of my refs. I based this design on the 2003 and 2019 designs for Godzilla.
Personality: Varies depending on incarnation; sometimes a protector of humanity, sometimes a force of nature, sometimes a punishment for humanity's hubris, wacky superhero, terrifying eldritch abomination... whatever you want, Godzilla can do it. In the specific films I referenced (the 2019 King of the Monsters and 2003 Tokyo SOS) he was a benevolent protector of humankind in one, and an enraged, destructive monster in the other.
Entry for Biohazardia 's "Characters into Dragons" contest! CONTEST JOURNAL
---
SO WOW, it took me a long time to decide what I wanted to do for this contest. My immediate idea was to do Fitz and the Fool from the Realm of the Elderlings books, but none of the official art really... matched the book descriptions of the characters or how I personally visualized them, so, unfortunately, they wouldn't have worked well for this. I then listed all the different things that I liked/had liked as a kid and Godzilla seemed like a really fun thing to try to turn into a Wings of Fire dragon! This was really fun and I might do a few other monsters in the future as well, if I'm in the mood for it.
What critters from the various Godzilla films would you be most interested in seeing as a Wings of Fire dragon next?
See him without the glowing effect here, and a transitional gif of it here.
Characterization:
Probably some sort of exiled prince.
Comes off as grumpy and intimidating, but he's actually a big softy (of course he can still kick your ass).
Major dad energy.
Possibly was involved in an underground fighting ring at some point in his life.
Design Notes:
I think my choices for tribes are fairly self-explanatory, but just in case, I'll break down my thoughts. All of the Wings of Fire dragons are really slim and slender except for the MudWings, really, so I had to use them; I mean, just look at Godzilla, he's ridiculously beefy! And of course, he had to be part SeaWing, since there's no version of him where he hasn't emerged dramatically from the ocean. The LeafWing is probably the least appropriate of the three, but in his 2003 design (and most of his designs ever) Godzilla's covered in irregular, rocky skin. None of the tribes really have anything like that; their scales are pretty smooth and organized into nice, predictable patterns. The LeafWings had somewhat irregular scales and an interesting pattern on their wings, so I decided to add them in as well!
The fins on his back are irregular to match the shapes of the fins on Godzilla's back; whether they're a result of the mingling of SeaWing and LeafWing blood or battle-scars is up to you! I based the glow effect off the 2019 version; the bright blue light and the swirling veins are super pretty.
His colours were pretty easy to lay down. Just a blue-grey with some countershading. It's probably too dark to be a typical colour for a SeaWing, and there's no influence from the other two tribes in there, but perhaps this version of Godzilla is melanistic. I gave him blue fire; he'd probably be like a MudWing and only be able to use it when he's warm. His fins and eyes glow when he uses it due to his SeaWing blood; I don't think he'd be able to control it, it just happens when he breathes fire.
His legs were... interesting to do. The front legs were based on MudWings, with LeafWing scales and webbed feet. I originally sketched the back legs as normal digitigrade ones, but then realized that all three of the tribes I picked had plantigrade hind legs more similar to bears, so I had to adjust that! It ended up being much more appropriate for Godzilla than what had been there originally, but I'm just personally more fond of digitigrade legs on dragons. Oh well.

As a kid I remember thinking the only way Godzilla could be cooler was if he had wings. Now I finally get to see what that might have looked like!
It's amazing how this is a dragon but also so distinctively Godzilla-like. The scales and especially those stout limbs evoke him very well. The longer, more elongated face makes him look sleeker and predatory so I'm a big fan. I wonder what he'd look like if he had the distinctive dorsal spines.

very proportionate body though perhaps wings could be a bit longer, well done.

Oh, he's great. So absolutely favorited. I recently ran a pernese dragon rpg Hatching where several of the dragonets were inspired by Godzilla and other kaiju in the 2019 movie. Those were a lot of fun to write >)
