Description
I have had a few requests to do instructional videos on my drawing process. I don't have a motion screen capture programme, so I thought I would upload an image with a series of photos along the way of my latest drawing - 'Only one of us will come out of this alive!'1. I start with the idea and pencil it onto either paper or Bristol Board.
2. Once I am happy with the pencil lines I trace them onto a piece of semi-opaque paper using Artline pens (0.1 - 0.8mm). I then scan this image and work on Photoshop Elements 9 using a Wacom Bamboo tablet. When painting I always keep my lines on a separate layer at the top (set to multiply).
3. I use 'temp layers' to block in base colours of the characters and merge them down when I am happy with what ever aspect I'm doing. If I'm experimenting I won't merge down for safety.
I then decide on direction of light source/s. To create depth on the block colours I create new layers (in multiply mode) and use contrasting colours and greys to block in areas where light wouldn't hit. I also add textures using the faux brushes.
4. For the background I start off with either a light gradient fill or bucket fill of an underlying colour (Similar to a wash in a watercolour). In this picture I used a fill of light yellow, set to about 10% transparency. Using the line tool I create shadows on the mountains and behind the stones on the ground. In the sky I trace the clouds with the line tool and create a range of purple/peach hues. I then rub out the cloud lines on the line drawing layer. The planet Cybertron is painted in a similar way to the mountains, keeping in mind the light direction and the highlights on the landscape, plus the sun brightness is created using a new layer set to screen.
5. The final touches are added. Again a new layer in screen print mode and areas in direct sunlight, the glow of the eyes and lens flares from the eyes and sun are added.
