Description
Mort Drucker - My earliest comic book influence. I regularly picked up MAD magazine for years before I picked up my very first "super hero" comic book, and the main reason for buying MAD was for Drucker's inspired movie parodies! To this day, whenever I have to draw a likeness, it's all Mort! I also still regularly use many of his deceptively loose rendering cyphers. Books to look for: Mort Drucker's MAD Show-Stoppers, Familiar Faces: The Art of Mort Drucker, & MAD About the Movies.Arthur Adams - Still my most dominant and noticeable influence! Ever since I laid my eyes on X-MEN Annual #12, I've been hooked! Most noticeable still in my style is his dynamics, body positioning, facial expressions and understructure. Books to look for: Arthur Adams: X-MEN LEGENDS 3 & Longshot.
Jim Lee - Having been fortunate enough to have mentored under Jim Lee first hand, you can still see a very obvious influence in my work to this day. Most notably, in my storytelling and rendering of figures and backgrounds, and the kinetic speed at which the artwork appears to be produced. Favorite Jim Lee books: X-MEN Visionaries: Jim Lee, X-Tinction Agenda, & BATMAN: HUSH.
DISNEY - Originally thinking for many years that I would be an animator before I ever considered the idea of being a comic book artist, the classic and modern age animated features of Walt Disney Studios remains a dominant influence on my approach to art! Most prominently, the work of:
Marc Davis - Marc's designs of both the Princess and Maleficent from "Sleeping Beauty" remain two of my all time favorites! Not to mention his design and animation of Tinkerbell! Marc's artwork came to define the BEST in Disney females, and probably still hasn't been topped to this day!
Fred (Freddy) Moore - You most likely wouldn't have had a Marc Davis girl if Fred Moore hadn't defined his vision of the "Freddy Moore Girl" first! His signature "girly" art and animation can be seen in the shorts "All the Cats Join In" in Make Mine Music, "Casey Bats Again", The "centaurettes" in Fantasia, and my personal favorites, the mermaids in Perter Pan!
Milt Kahl - His graphic, angular and often lanky character designs lend themselves to the aesthetics of my figures very well. An older influence that I've only recently come to revisit and reincorporate. Some of my favorites: Roger and Anita from 101 Dalmatians, Shere Khan and King Louie in The Jungle Book, and his work in The Aristocats and The Sword in the Stone. Any doubters should simply google "Milt Kahl" and "Hands" and be WOWED by the jpeg compilations that pop up!
Great Disney related books: The Illusion of Life, DRAWN to LIFE Vol 1 & 2, and Walt Disney's Nine old Men. And if you're REALLY lucky!!... Les HΓ©roΓ―nes Disney.
Phew! ... to be continued...

Thanks for this post! I recently discovered your wonderful art reading the XMen Messiah Complex compilation. I loved how fluidly you captured Mystique and Lady Deathstrike so much I had to look you up.
It's been a great help to see your influences and find out who created all my favourite old school disney characters.
Thanks again

Not really a movie - a video game back in the day called "Dragon's Lair". Her name was Princess Daphne who Dirk was always trying to save, (if you were a bad player), from the dragon, Singe. Lovely, sexay lady.

Ah, so Milt Kahl is responsible for those gorgeous hands in the earlier Disney films. I always wondered how they did them so perfectly when I was a kid.

I recently came across a book by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson titled The Illusion of Life so far it's a good book and I have always loved drawing. I haven't posted anything new on my deviant art since High School but I have been getting into animation but I always go back to the comic book art I like for inspiration.
So far I have bought a few books:
Wizard how to draw all of them
The Animators Survival Kit by Richard Williams -It's a great book
The Illusion of Life
I want to get both Drawn to Life books.
Also animation disc and just the pegbar are hard to find and to order online the shipping is rediculous, double the price of the actual pegbar.
I love your art and your one of my top favorite artist ever.

You are officially the only other person I have heard give a nod to Mort Drucker. Brings back memories. I am a huge fan of his and Sam Viviano's. You do fantastic work.

Don Bluth, Marc Davis and Adam Hughes are some influential artists of mine as well, but I can't leave out Glen Keane or Robert Crumb.
Did you notice these are all men who draw women? lol

I had always thought you had a Gil Elvgren flair to your women. I had even noticed some of the pin-up looks to covers and such. Glad to see Gil is living on through modern artists! *he was a genius and rendering gorgeous women through the brush*

I love Frazetta's work! I remember looking through his art when I was a little boy, it always amazed me at how fluid and animated his work seemed. It was lihe watching a movie to me. When I was about 8 I found five prints of his at an antique store, I spent an hour deciding which one I wanted. I talked my mother into getting two! ^_^

Wow Jeff, this is like someone posting the ingredients to Apple Pie. Amazing.
I remember first seeing your "animated" take on Gen13 characters in a card set years ago, and wondering where that came from. It wasn't Adams, and it wasn't Lee.
Now it all makes sense
Good work and looking forward to more Spidey stuff from you!

This is the perfect explanation as to why I admired your work from the moment I came across it.
The Mort Drucker pic actually brought tears to my eyes as I remembered laughing to tears reading the movie parodies as a kid and being amazed at how so much humor could be found in just the artwork alone (best caricatures ever).
