Description
(original template: `fox-orian [link] )Sooo everyone is doing this, so why not jump on the badnwagon? The problem is, I think I have hundreds, no, thousands, no, hundreds of thous-- okay, I think I have MANY influences, so I tried to narrow things down to drawing/painting (leaving stuff like music, cinema and photography out of the equation, not to mention real life) and to stick with the artists whose work not only I enjoy, but also gives me that itch for picking up a pencil myself and start drawing ASAP
Frank Frazetta - I didn't give him the 3x3 square just because he's on par with Wendling and the risk was that those two alone would eat up half of the space, lol. It's hard to pinpoint what exactly prompts me to draw/paint after looking at Frank's work, but it's there. I certainly love the anatomy, and the carnal, tactile feeling of his figures. I also like how he didn't overdo the details where it wasn't needed. All I know is that it leaves me wanting to go and draw something awesome.
Katsuhiro Otomo - here's another artist whose work makes me go "hell yeah comics!", because what he did with Akira was showing you could do something spectacular, over the top and intense within the limits of a bunch (well, a big bunch) of black and white panels. It inspires me to think big.
*AdamHughes - I just want to steal his hand and sew it to my wrist, ok? (ew.) He draws so well and his lines are flawless. I also love his coloring style. And I think that he does cheesecake right - his female figures are über sexy, but never vulgar, and always show a distinct personality. I would want to be friends with those women
Barry Windsor-Smith - He would have gotten the 3x3 square ten years ago, I suppose
Chris Bachalo - what can I say, every time I see his stuff - both the old and new one - I can't suppress an "omg, so PRETTY" squee. One could argue that in the last few years the dynamic exaggerations and the love for design have overrun the readability of his art, but I'd still love to pull that off. There's so much movement in his panels, even when it's just a standing figure.
Léon Spilliaert - with Kupka, this is just the tip of the iceberg for all the inspiration I draw from Taschen's Symbolism book. Even if I don't think it really shows in my art, eerie, mysterious imagery almost always prompts me to draw.
Claire Wendling - FUUUUUU- I love her work, period. Actually, the reasons are pretty much the same I have for loving Frazetta. The way she represents the human (and animal) body - man, I wish I could do that.
Jim Lee - I started reading Marvel comics in the early 90's so yeah, Jim Lee was pretty much unavoidable. Today, most of those comics look cheesy and overdone, and Lee himself has moved on to a more solid style, but there are still pieces of my art where I can see the influence of those books here and there.
Frantisek Kupka - actually, Kupka turned to abstract art later, but this piece, The black idol, is still great food for my imagination. Flawless composition, striking imagery, and I have a soft spot for the overall texture of it too.
Alphonse Mucha - who is not listing Mucha in this meme? The lines, the colors, the composition - we all owe a lot to him, it's impossible to avoid.
Takehiko Inoue - even when I was really into manga, I never really tried to emulate that style - when I did, I always veered towards semi-realism as soon as I lowered my guard. Inoue is one of the few mangakas whose style, instead, stuck with me to a certain extent. And he draws the hottest guys :3
Joshua Middleton - his colors, and the overall cleanliness of his lines are something I often try to go for. Like with Bachalo, I can't get over the prettiness of it all.
Loish - probably my biggest inspiration here at Deviantart, though one could say that Deviantart as a whole is an inspiration... I like her designs but mostly I looove her palettes and the subtly textured feeling of her colors.
Gil Elvgren - another unavoidable one - I love retro illustration and well done pinup art, and in Elvgren's case, I'm really drawn to his soft, but not overly polished painting style. On a general note, I prefer artists that are able to handle a lock of hair with a single brush stroke rather than those who paint every single hair.
Enrico Marini - Marini is, simply put, the kind of comic artist I would like to become. I aim for that kind of realistic-but-clean style, and I wouldn't mind drawing some historical adventure like Le Scorpion
Aubrey Beardsley - yay symbolism/art nouveau again!
Katsuya Terada - back in the day, the lovely wacca sent me a spare Terada artbook she owned... I guess that what tickles my imagination is the mix between the refined painting style and the kinky/creepy subjects.
Mike Mignola - I'm a latecomer to the Mignola party, though one could say I was indirectly influenced by him through the work of Italian cartoonist Nicola Mari, who put his own spin to the Mignola style early in his career. Anyhow, it's not his style I try to emulate, but his ability to create a mysterious, fascinating atmosphere with so few lines.
Shinya Hasegawa - another comeback from my manga-heavy years, I still see the influence of Hasegawa's work on Utena when I draw female hands
