I would like that very much if you did do one like this on your next shoot. In fact,it would brighten my day considerably. Our waterheater broke this week and flooded part of my house, including my costume workshop, so I'm not having the best of times right now. I need all the cheering up I can get.

Heh, "perfect" is stretching it. Honestly, his face in particular was the hardest part of the picture (that goes for the whole set, as well). I changed it so many times... at one point, I even sent a close-up pic of his face over my phone to my sweetheart to complain. XD I'm still not confident in how I draw him, but I do think this is the best version of Barry Hatch I've drawn so far.
So tldr ...I love the odd ones, so I just don't give up on them.

I've been on a historical project the last couple of years as well as couple of others that required heavy realism, so it has effected my "for fun" drawing style.

The belt on his jacket? Black strap (same as the jacket fabric) with a gold buckle.

Oh, thank you. Barry's face actually went through many changes as I worked on the picture. At one point, I even sent a snap shot of it over the phone to my sweetheart to complain about the way his face was turning out. XD Barry is still very difficult for me to draw. :/

I've tried all kinds of programs for line art (in fact I will be trying Sai sometime soon), and I really haven't found one single way I like do it. When I line digitally I tend to use settings that mimic pencil lines, more than ink lines. I do that, because when I line traditionally, I use a dark leaded, fine mechanical pencil for my lines, then scan the picture into the computer to adjust. I can no longer line accurately with real ink, because my hand has become too shaky.

It is not that you're stupid, you just haven't found the way that works best for you yet. There are very good tutorials on DA/online about different ways to clean up both scanned and digital line work in various programs.

I notice a lot of people that use SAI use it for their anime art, it's just too tedious for me...

Yeah I totally forgot to try inking w/ different types of brushes, when I do it traditionally I too use a mechanical pencil. I really like the style you make Barry too. He isn't supposed to be pretty or 'bishie' and I really always loved that wrinkly grittiness about him. Even down to the tacky stooge-moe bowlcut he has, he IS hard to draw with all the unique features!

I saw your journal about inking help. I hope that it is working better for you now.

I also like that Hatch is not "bishounen". I do believe that he was probably once stereotypically attractive, but living with Reaver and doing things that Reaver does has caused many changes in Hatch's appearance. I've always considered Hatch to be like Reaver's mirror. I saw that you are playing Fable 2. Have you achieved the personality/alignment description of the Decadent? If you do, you will see many similarities between your appearance (more so if you're playing a male) and Barry Hatch's appearance.
My sweetheart, who is a tremendous admirer of classic literature, also likes to think of Hatch in the way of Dorian Gray's portrait, and he is so excited about all he scars and such we will have to apply for his cosplay make-up. (I'm jealous, because I was supposed to be Barry Hatch originally, but circumstances required that we switch. ^_^; I'm still very happy to dress him up though.)

I'm a tremendous admirer of Oscar Wilde...offended many an audience on FB with some of his quotes...

^^Precisely how I feel about him most of the time!! I've always loved that novel and other classical literature myself. I don't want to sound totally lame and hacksy, but I view all of the mansion women that are 'regulars' as the roses in the garden from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's Little Prince; "...you are all beautiful, but you are empty," he went on. "One would not die for you..."

I'm such a hopeless romantic myself! I haven't gotten very far in Fable 2, but I can definitely see the idea you're explaining. He's been hardened and I think that's what makes me gravitate towards him more. It's interesting to see a lot of the teen fangirls go nuts over Reaver when there's such a jewel in Mr. Hatch to be found. I can imagine how tedious and interesting applying scars would be for cosplay! I do also have a wallpaper I made of him with an excerpt from Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" pertaining to the 'hounded slave' portion of the long poem. I'd have to give you such a big hug and kiss if I saw you in person as Barry or your hunny, because it's the closest I'd ever get T___T

I'll stop before I go on and on about philsophical observance in classic literature...but thanks again for the tip in PS, it's just a lot of different meticulous tools to deal with. I only just started using PS in December, so a lot of things are self taught and I'm still messing with settings very slowly. I might just break down and attend a class perhaps!
