Description
He had seen his home destroyed a second time and could still smell the floodwater stagnating everywhere he went. When Ataw closes his eyes he hears the gulp of air leave Uncle Dare's lungs when the water hit him. When he settles in with his family at night he's unable to make himself big enough to fill the empty space left by his older sister's disappearance. During the day he can keep his smile up, escorting Elks to harvesting grounds to rebuild their stores and wandering the woods with Sleet to find the cold trails of Chandor's herds.

By daylight, Ataw can keep it together for his family.

But at night he doesn't sleep. His frustrations bubble over but has nowhere to go. He is awake. When he was a child he longed so deeply to see midnight , but now he knows it's not so grand. He finds himself roaming until he's tired down into his marrow and the moon his only companion. The world feels blurry and unreal. He wants to cry, to scream, to something to someone. Anyone. But there's no tangible enemy he can blame for the loss of Faucon's mentor. There's no one to yell at to return Mila to his family.

All there is, it seems to him anyway, is more to lose.
