Ooooh, the terragen terrain here is really cool, but the dark side of the planet doesn't look right.

Perhaps the mountains block the reflection, or there is not enough light on the south side of the planet to be reflected.

this is not very special, even if it's good work.
i like the water and the very little sandy beaches down
the mountains.

the texture of the planet might need some work and...
maybe lightening of the planet... well i'm not quite shure
where your "sun" or lightsource will be.

well done either!

love the terragen. nice work, but it cinda feels like the planet could use a little touching up on the texture. just what came to mind...

great pic anyway +fav

... words have left me. Wow ... no ... not even wow. Just ... wow ... lol, boy do I hate when I have no words. I would ... explode? Explode of happines?
Yes, I would, if I would be able to stop everything around me and just lose myself, being drawn around ... it. It ... it inspires many sphere thoughts in
my mind. Like ... and important sphere. As if ... those mountains ... on the outside ... hold our world ... while being in a world of their own. Perhaps
Heaven. I do not know. It could also inspire a rainbow. Without the expected colours. A whole new kind of rainbow. I love it how in the rainbow you can
see more mountains. Perhaps a reflection from the surroundings. Or perhaps it's a map. A map of the area where this view can be attained to view.
Mere words ... are useless to describe what I see and feel here. I will favour it, so that I may look at it from time to time, and enjoy it's splendor.
................ I'm going to watch you as well.

Aww, I'm ... happy you liked my comment lol. But even those mere words that I have said, can not even begin to
compare to how I truly feel towards that picture. It's ... just ... I don't know how to describe lol. Sometimes I wish
my heart would help me put things into words. Being a translator is difficult lol. XD.

amazing!

but the horizon at left is so bright in comparison to the rest of the picture so it really draws the attention to that part of the picture.

ps; dont know if anyone else have said anything similar, to much text above

I like it Is the planet yours? Anyway, the Terragen is pretty good too... just needs some more work on the terrain, I think...

Yeah i made the planet myself. The texture is like 3 or 4 i found from stock.xhc blended. Im quite proud of it ^_^

Thehe, don't be angry, I do not intend to bother you but I want to explain, why I usually prefer smaller pictures and this is an example (and you have turned on Advanced Critique).
Since you have the full version of Terragen you could have rendered the terrain with more points, I personally do really dislike these jagged edges (or is that why you call yourself 'jagged'??). Therefore, in my opinion, I see nothing positive in rendering it this big...you have a nice high-res background but I think it doesn't really fit the low-res terrain. Well, really, I hope that you are not annoyed...

jagged-r0cks In reply to Hector42 [2005-12-28 17:50:36 +0000 UTC]

Wait, are you saying that the jagged-ness is caused by a low res map? Hm... See, i was looking at some stock i had and was thining to myself that i seem to only like the low res terrains. I guess thats it. So, are those jagged spikes a major known charecteristic of crappy terrains? I liked them, but i guess if they are seen by other Tgenners as a low res terrain i shouldnt use it.

Please respond, as i said this was my first render with the full Version. Im still trying to learn the differences, because i have to change the ratio of everything in my head to larger things. You know what i mean?

Hector42 In reply to jagged-r0cks [2005-12-29 00:53:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'm pretty sure. You may do what you want, if you like it keep it but these jaggs really are the edges of the quadrangulated terrain geometry. Erm, yes, sorry that I find this a bit crappy...I should explain that this is the reason why I find the whole Terragen a bit crappy... since I dicovered Mojoworld wich really blew my mind. A few words on this prog: it constructs a whole planet out of various fractals with quasi-unlimited detail and adds displacement (not only bumpmaps), but i's a bit more expensive and A LOT more complex. Even Terragens maximum quad count is faaaar below Mojoworlds resolution. Terragen2 is something like Mojoworld I think but it's surely not that cool.
Hope I can help you a bit with these renders (I never really got into bumps and background - shame on me ):

- highest or nearly highest terrain resolution - I think there are still some of those jaggs visible
- highest resolution and bigger, smoother features - no jaggs
- a part of your image (hope you don't mind) - can you see how huge your quads are? 1: look at this shape 2: this is the edge of one quad! (between the arrows) 3: hua, all these sharp jaggs are edges and corners of terrain quads

The problem is, that with a steeper (or more jaggy) terrain, the likelyhood of unwanted strong jaggs - due to a lack of terrain resolution - increases. This even troubles Mojoworld, but this prog overcomes it by automatically adding detail until pixel-level detail is reached. However, this greatly increases the rendertime for steep terrains.
In Terragen you'll have to find the balance between terrain steepness/natural jaggedness and terrain resolution. For high-res terrains you should have enough RAM and MHz because this can be a lot slower to render.
I haven't used Terragen for quite some time, the major things I remember which are different in the full version are the terrain size (up to 4000 x 4000 or something) and a much better anti-aliasing option.
At the end of all: thehe, if you like the jaggs, keep them - I'm not sure if those can be achieved with the fractal terrain function in Terragen the way you like it...I don't think so...if you are afraid that other Tgenners may find find this crappy (hehe, like I do, but never mind )...well, hehe, do what makes you happy...

Wow, now i see exactly what you mean. There are little abrupt changes in slope at very feined intervals, which is the stretched resolution of the .ter file. I guess i havnt been working with 3d render enough to see these details, but thanks alot for helping me out. I think they if they are seen as a bad resolution by many, im not going to stretch the terrain anymore. Its kinda like using lens flare in photoshop i guess. Even if you think it looks good, and it does look good, everybody knows exactly how you got it and it just taked the goodness out of the picture.

Well i hope that made sense. That was the best comment i have ever receieved. You earned a watch.

Well, I love to explain things and I love to hear myself explaining things nevertheless I'm a nice guy who generally wants to help
I realized that most comments are without a 'what' and a 'why' reading like this:"Whoa, cooool!" Very kind but a bit critique wouldnt' hurt. So I try to make it better and you are one of my first victims
Ah, you resized the terrain...now I know, why it looked familiar and unfamiliar at the same time (I never resized).
I'm glad that I could help - and many many thanks for the watch

You definitly don't need to put up a bigger one..

It looks like some weird contrast between the mountains and the planet, but otherwise it looks cool

This is some of the kind of work I wanted to do when I first started doing Planets and Terragen. But sadly, I don't have the patience to figure out how to get a higher quality render from Terragen and it doesn't always work on my computer. Very nice work.

I can't tell if the planet is behind the scene or ...not, it looks like it's fading into the mountaints :[ I cannot choose heh but if it were behind the mountains, I'd darken em .. to me it just looks like it's lightly erased over it or ....something I dunno

but I love it, especially the planet, I saw it and was refreshed. Great job
