Description Another background for a Hanako Games title!

Looking back at this, it's weird how I can remember the exact subject being discussed on a podcast I was listening to as I made certain parts of the BG. (It was Mac OS file systems as I worked on the metal brace bolts on the intersecting wooden beams, in case you're wondering.)

Thank you! You have some nice work too, I remember seeing some of your designs before

Kinda love the mood in this, and this dusty kind of fog~
Makes it look mysterious, plus it's great as a VN background as it doesn't distract too much from the sprites while still looking great.

Yeah, I thought of it as some hall buried in a labyrinth of passages with lots of secrets. I'm glad you think it works as a VN background. Thanks for the comment

My personal taste is that it's a litte too monochromatic. I probably would have gone for orange lighting particularly if the lighting is fire/candle. I like the overall composition and depth.

(I could've sworn I replied this.)

Perhaps I was a little too heavy-handed with the colour grading. A lot of dust, coupled with the fact that red light tends to fade quicker than blue might explain the candle in the distance appearing less orange, but it probably does make more sense for the out-of-frame candle on the right to be illuminating with more vivid warm colours. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm clearly in need of some rest - I thought "What are they doing with a trident in a bucket?" Β for a bit before I realised it's just the broom stick and the bucket's handle...

I quite like the texture on the wall in particular, a lot of backgrounds suffer from mega-clean-syndrome, but yours are more tactile than most. I'm unsurprised Hanako is using your services, I'm sure reviews will comment on the backgrounds positively once the game is out! I also like how the browns are quite warm (at least on my screen) and almost take a turn for a muted purple. I'm quite curious to see how the characters will look on top of this (if they go on top, I'm not sure - they might be in a box or something).

I actually used to get that weird memory thing while drawing all the time. I'd scribble in class and looking back at the scribbles I'd remember the bit of lesson that was being imparted while I was drawing a particular area. Maybe it's similar to how sounds and smells are more likely to bring back memories than other things - when you're drawing or modelling perhaps you're dropping some more logical processes and leave the more instinctive ones to act? It's kind of interesting, either way.

Thanks for your comment. I'm also interested to see how it'll play in the final product with the other assets. I've tested them on top in Photoshop, but it never feels the same as in the finished thing.

The memory thing in both our cases was an (unintentional) mnemonic device -- people can remember large amounts of otherwise difficult to remember information if they associate it with something they remember more easily, such as an acronym, a story, or objects real or imagined. It's still weird to look back and experience it though!

(Also, bah, I submitted a new comment instead of a reply to yours >.>)
