Description

– I’m taking this week off for Christmas and to get the new issue of Combine out. I know last week was light on strips, but I’ll be back next week with new strips. The Mermaid story is about to heat up! In the mean time I’ll have some really cool stuff later this week, so please check back on Weds and Friday!

– My very favorite place to eat in Portland is a Chinese restaurant on 39th and Hawthorne called Lucky Strike. For years Lucky Strike has been part of a tradition for my self and other Portland cartoonists. After a convention or book signing we always go to get some late night Sichuan food. Lucky Strike has a fantastic menu,a  fantastic bar and a fantastic staff. It also projects movie onto a large screen. Eating there over the last few months I’ve seen parts of Shaolin Soccer, Spirited Away, Police Story, Fistful of Dollars and Big Trouble in Little China. I was devastated to discover that Lucky Strike is closing this Sunday. It’s the latest victim in the ongoing Portland land grab, with investors buying up local property and jacking up the rent to drive the current tenants out. My neighborhood is starting to look like a ghost town, with businesses that have been here for years forced to close. Even my local game store Red Castle Games is facing this problem. Anyway, tonight I got together with Ben Hsu (of Liscensed Heros), Jaymz Bernard (of Devil Spy), Alan Ward (of Metamorphosis Protocol), Dax (of Beaver Comic), Barry Deutsch (of Hereville) and some other friends for one last spicy meal. it was worth it. I’ll miss the place! As a tribute I thought I’d post Modest’s trip to Lucky Strike, a three part comic that appeared in the Season 3 book. I hope you all enjoy it!

I don't like it when good places close.  I still miss the Thai restaurant that was near my house.

The comic is super cute, especially the one snake going berserk for more spice at the end.

I sympathize with your loss of a great restaurant/hangout (like a lot of other people here seem to as well!).  Over the last two years, the neighborhood where I lived in St. Louis lost several shops and restaurants that had been a real staple since I moved there 10 years ago.  My wife and I had to move at the end of July (work related), but in the months leading up to that, it was a sad thing to walk down the street and see only "for rent" signs or corporate facades in place of the comic book store, the Lebanese place, or the fashion boutique where we used to know people and be able to hang out or just pop in and say "hi."

It seems to be happening everywhere. It also seems totally unnecessary to me, since most of these businesses are doing quite well. I think it's a case of the rich seeing the moderately well off making money and deciding to horn in on it. Well, it's probably more complicated then that.

I'll have that pepper chicken if she' not finishing it!  I love hot Szechuan food and haven't had any in years, it seems.

Oh goodness Jake. I'm so sorry to hear about this. Thinking good thoughts for the people who ran it and worked there. This is a wonderful tribute.

Oh man... A mixture of feels. Another simple, cute and funny comic, but then learning about the terrible goings on in Portland. Sorry to hear that. I experienced something similar in Grants Pass when a lot of pretty good local businesses had to close up shop because of costs.

Man... sorry to hear about the restaurant closing down... heartless bastards crushing mom and pop places really pisses me off. Probably going to be replaced with tasteless, boring, expensive garbage.. or McMansions like they're doing over where I live.

Mmm that waitress looks very much similar to his niece... *suspicious look* it's probably nothing... or is it...

I don't do a lot of character variety here. So if you're a short, thin white/Asian woman with short black hair, that's how I'm drawing you.

I understand that I have a default background character look as well it helps so I don't get caught up making a whole universe of characters

I how you draw her hair.  each has its own personality.
the one who ate the chicken wants more more more. twice the hair stretched for more.
Looked so depressed with its head lying on the table. haha

She sometimes doesn't bathe. But she's also sometimes just a  stinker.
