well this tactic is often used, team up with some other people, take down the enemy, and when thats over take out each other. it's basically teamwork for self gain.

I did point that out to my boyfriend, but he in turn pointed out that otherwhise we wouldn't have an Unreal Tournament-clone. In other words this selection-strategy makes perfect sense.

The game manual explains it - the demigod earn favour by winning matches, which is easier to do in teams. That said, the alliances are purely for selfish convenience, which is why they shuffle around every round.
Great comic all the same, though. I really like the cartoony style.

Hmmmmmm, that is a good question. Might just get too confusing if it was an all out free for all. Then again, there's really no teamwork. No communication, nothing.
