Description Most of the towns and even cities in Newfoundland are very small, a lot of them are small fishing villages that are falling into disrepair do to the collapse of the fishing industry.  Fortunately for the blue collar workers of Newfoundland there is a replacement in the form of oil, which is far more lucrative than fishing.  What this means is that Newfoundland just like most other places in Canada, is slowly losing its character.  The small wooden houses of the countryside are being replaced with larger homes with vinyl siding that require less maintenance, pretty soon it will look like every other province in this country.

Salvage, Newfoundland, Canada at dusk. Population 174.

How sad for these little fishing towns.

And oil & gas is not a savior, either. Most supplies start out big, then fade and the communities are left to deal with the aftermath and the pollution.

What a shame. Such a beautiful, idealistic place.

Great twilight photography, BTW.

Thank you.

I believe most of the reserves in the Newfoundland area are all offshore.

Good composition here. Looks like you found the perfect spot because all the houses you included in the frame have a nice dynamic between each other. That's hard to achieve.

Your story is sad. Oil might not be the saving grace, either, because it's destroying our planet and sooner or later people that commit to that branch will pay the bill. Either because they will suffer under the impacts of the climate change or because the people/government will step in and decrease/forbid the use of oil by law. They should probably look into renewable energies, which is the safest bet for their future imho.

Some places stay pretty true to their origins though. I think places like Dawson City could remain much of that even under the pressure of intensive tourism.

Thank you.

True the emissions from burning fossil fuels destroys the atmosphere but as long is there is a demand, there will be a source.  China will have a strong demand for them for the foreseeable future.

We will see what happens with Newfoundland but regardless, it will still have some great landscapes.

Yep, the landscape won't go anywhere in the near future.

Well, I think China is trying to make their jump to renewable energies as well. Because of the high population they are forced to do something. I think it's more those countries, that are trying to become developed countries as well, that have a high demand of fossil fuels.

Very cool photograph, especially when taken in context with your narrative.
One of the greatest things about traveling is embracing regional character...
one of the worst things is to have lost regional character. Over my 50 years
of traveling the U.S. I can say regional character assassination has occurred
blatantly, due partly to chain business, and loss of unique local commerce.
Thank you very much for your superb photograph, and honest insight!

You have hit the nail on the head, during road trips it is no longer difficult to find a walmart to park your car for the night.
