Cool! I'm doing a skeletal study in my next class.
Its going to be on gray toned paper, what medium do you prefer?

I always prefer pencil on paper with a finish of ink, but you can achieve a great look with charcoal and white chalk on gray paper. Good luck with it

Thanks
I used charcoal with white pastel on gray paper and it worked out well!
Thanks for the tip!

You're drawing with sharp and hard edges, makes it look less biological and more mechanic.
I like the looks but it reminds me rather of a robot then of a man to be honest..

Thanks for your comments I'm happy you like the way it looks.
I'm also glad it looks the way it does, as the skeleton isn't a man in my opinion, a 'man' is the animator of this shell. Therefore when I draw a skeleton, I have literally zero intention of representing a human being. I am drawing a mechanical object, an evolved one, but still most definitely a piece of nature's amazing engineering.
I love creating organic looking forms, but of all the things you'll see in nature, the skeleton is one of the most engineered looking.
The more you look at the skeleton in detail the more you will see this, I strongly recommend you spend some time looking

Well that is an interesting thought and you are right when you think that I haven't gotten around to look more closely how skeletons are like...
You seem to like bionics as well! You know, technological stuff that is based off of mother natures work
As I took a sneak peek at your gallery I am guessing you have quite a lot of experience in that general direction~

Yes exactly I am very interested in a nature/technology fusion I'm glad you see that in my work!

what a cool piece! i agree with the comments above- it's too easy to overlook the complexity and convenience of the body's forms and functions unless unless a great amount of time is taken to detail them, as you have here.

my favorite thing about this piece is the strength of the different line weights and the visible hatchmarks!

Yeah I like to keep the marks a little looser sometimes and create different textures...

I'm glad you like it!!

When observing the skeleton the way you do it's quite inspirational! You kind of get that "I didn't know I had that" sort of feeling. Makes you really, really appreciate your body and the human form. Not just on the "artistic nude appearance" but much deeper, more visceral, and especially with the angles you take on!

jamesjulier In reply to AokiBengal [2008-12-18 00:15:59 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad that my drawings show my fascination with the skeleton, thank you

When you forget your preconceptions of what the skeletal form and it functions are, and you just really look at it, then its possible to see it as a thing of real beauty from a purely abstract and aesthetic view point - mother nature really is the best creator!

AokiBengal In reply to jamesjulier [2008-12-18 00:31:39 +0000 UTC]

Quite so! I think so many of us really take our own bodies for granted and don't appreciate them, or aspects of them as much as we should. I think that's the beauty of art, it requires you to sit down and study, really study what it is you're drawing.
Makes me feel that more people should study anatomy more to really understand and appreciate what they're made of and how they work. Perhaps if people did that they'd take care of themselves a bit more!
And Thank You for posting these amazing renderings!
