Description
The 4th book in a series of sci fi novels - www.iamjustjunco.com/ This image is not available to buy as it's copyrighted by the client. The image is a wrap-around cover, the front is on the right, the spine in the middle, the back cover to the left.
The image was completed over a few weeks, on and off, so I am guessing a few days full time work.
All painted from scratch in Photoshop CS5. The author provided a photograph of the woman, which I painted over. The photograph was purchased here on shutterstock - www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml…

Do you use all tricks of Photoshop? Or only paste the photography and work with brushes?
Would you say it is legitimate, if you have the programm with all those funktions, to use it? I mean it is a time full of digital tools! Some artists say that digitalartist are cheating, because of all these funktions.

I mainly just brush. Sometimes I use photographs and paint over them. I use photoshop to create lots of shapes with the lasso tolls as well. I also use the vanishing point tool to place shapes into perspective. It's all art I think. All the top professionals use the tools.

Thank you. ^^
But can you explain me, what the vanishing point tool is? I use AdobePhotoshop, so not the big programm. But maybe I can learn some tricks. ;D

Do you mean Adobe Photoshop Elements? In that case you don't have the vanishing point tool. It's a grid system that allows you to paste shapes/text into perfect perspective. Most artists don't use it at all, it's usually used by graphic designers, so don't worry about not having it for now. You don't need it.

I think so. Adobe Photoshop Elements is enough for me. I mean I have a lot of brushes, Eraser... and so on. Maybe not the best for drawings, but it works. ^^
Do you know PaintToolSai? I hear everywhere, that mainly the mangafans use it. I think I don't need it. Do you use any programm alongside photoshop?

Yes, I started with elements. It has everything you need for painting/drawing for sure.
I have never used painttoollsai, so I know nothing about it.
I don't use anything other than Photoshop. Some artists will use a 3D program, like Google sketch-up or cinema 4D. This way they can create complicated shapes to paint over in Photoshop.
I used to find drawing spherical or circular objects difficult, but now I am finally getting better at it. I used to avoid anything that wasn't square shaped!

I think elements allone is a big programm. Now I work for one year with it and I haven't found all functions yet.
Haha, nice to heare, that the master had had problems, too. But I think you can only learn it, if you do it! (I think I have to do a lot. )

Yes, elements is huge enough its self. All masters have problems, they just get better at hiding them.

They are good at finding a solution if they can't draw something, or something isn't working. I will do it often. If I can't draw a person, I put an object in front of them or a really bright light behind them so I can draw the person as a silhouette, which is easier!! No one would know that I spent 2 days trying to draw the person and had to give up..!

Maybe this is the different between hobbiests and masters. The hobbiest learn all the time and try to get better. But the master have commisions and have deadline. I mean he haven't the time to try to get better, when he have to get ready with the artwork. So the master have to find the solution. Right?
But how you geht for example the silhouette exactly? (I didn't understand the process, sry)

Yes, you said it better than me! That is exactly true.
Silhouette - is when something becomes completely black, because it is front of a very bright light, like the sun. Easy to paint a silhouette of a person, than painting all the details.

I know, what a silhouette is. How you made it? Do you take a picture of a person and draw it black or how does it works?
In this point of view, I'm glad to be a hobbiest.

I would take a photograph of someone, cut it out using the lasso tools in photoshop and then lock the layer, before filling the image with black.

Awesome cover! Nice incorporation of the DNA sequences. Clever idea there, considering what the book is about. Speaking of which, your art caused me to check out the link to said book. I guess the publisher is getting their money's worth out of hiring you already.
