Description Painted from scratch in Photoshop CS5. I used the vanishing point filter to get my perspective grids set up and align the planes. Took days to do, including revisions etc. Original image was 10,000 pixels wide, which is a bit of a strain on my iMac. Completed months and months ago.

I think I could favorite your entire gallery. Your work is exquisite. Would you mind me asking how you developed your skill set?

I started drawing about 3 to 4 years ago. I taught myself from scratch, using youtube, books and DVD's. It was very hard for the first 2 years. I had to draw 16 hours per day and I still do now. My style developed naturally, though I have neglected to draw characters, which I will need to do eventually. The most helpful tuition stuff was the DVD's by professionals, as they were slow and easy to follow. The advice I hear a lot is to develop an individual style as much as possible, though with a lot of concept art there are certain 'rules' with the design language, often making all concept art look very 'samey'. I like to use the vanishing point tool in photoshop to get precise perspective, though this can be very time consuming, where as freehand perspective is much quicker.

3 or 4 years!? NOW, I'm impressed! I've been drawing (seriously anyway...not just scribbles) for about 17, and you completely blow me out of the water.

As to most concept art looking very similar...I think there's actually a pretty good reason for it. Ideally, concept art is a mid-level development stage. They're not really end-products. The end product is something developed by lots of different artists and/or engineers, using lots of different tools. THey all need to be able to "read" the art to extract the useful bits of information, much like a schematic with a LOT more flair.

That said, all of my heroes are concept artists. They originate the ideas. Others just realize them.

If it weren't for that universal language element being necessary, concept art would probably be a lot more crude. FOr example, if you look at any of my CGI work - even the eye that's so popular - the concept art for each is nothing more than a loose sketch. Sometimes done in pen on binder paper. However, I'm the only one that needs to read it. Not really anything I'd ever post, though.

As well as I know Photoshop, I've never been able to paint in it properly...so kudos to you or anyone that can do it, especially at your level.

Yes, you are right there. I guess the design language is all that's needed for the purpose of a concept. Once modeled in 3d, the teams will give it a new touch of course. I have to practice daily still, about 10 to 16 hours per day, just to try and keep up with all the competition. I have a long way to go yet with characters and vehicles, as I keep finding out.
