In my opinion, the man behind the mask is very sad.This is for 's contest exploring the idea of Master Chief: the Man Behind the Mask.
I think he's got more than one mask. There's the physical mask that is keeping us from seeing his face, and there is the stony soldier mask that gets him through the day. In essence, poor John is alone. And I can imagine how lonely it is to suddenly lose all your friends and family in one fell swoop like he did. In "The Flood" he remarked to himself about how save Cortana, after Reach there wasn't a soul left alive who knew his name was John.
And he was looking at his own reflection a second ago, but his eye has wandered now. Every SPARTAN had armor like his... I wonder how many faces he is actually looking at in this moment.
So its my MC design from my comic in a real moody portrait. I've been meaning to make something like this for a long time, and I still owe Kitty a gift pic from before, but I thought I'd channel my many motivations into one well-lighted portrait.

That is exactly, well mostly, how I imagined him. Yeah, I think that is the look he would have aswell, must be sad being him. They love him, but they do not really know who he is.

This is really haunting and beautiful, I never thought of the scars, you know? It's easy to forget that there is always someone behind the mask.

The books were was talking about how thoughtful and quiet he is - the strong, silent type. You captured his "thoughtful eyes" (as Cortana put it) perfectly. He's almost exactly how I imagined him. You have made a Master Chief fangirl very happy.

GAWD. I hope he looks like this. You have a very interesting way of picturing him. I like it though. It looks much better than thinking he has one of those dorky military cuts (sorry to people who have those, they just aren't my cup of tea).
You owned with this though. Nice work. It's weird to see him as a real person though, if you think about it. Since he's only ever been seen in his armor, that's almost become his "symbol". Heh.

Excelent. Beautiful. You captivated the essence of what I've imagined how the Master Chief would be -- Sentimentally.
Behind that expresionless helmet that makes his enemies cower in fear and give hope to mankind, there is a lone soul that has lost everything he loved. He doesn't want to go back to the helmet. It means being alone in the entire universe. Yet, for the very ones that stripped him away from his family and made him what he is now, he fights.
An awesome piece. I saw some problems with the helmet (the breather is a little too big), but the piece is very emotional, and it transmits it's feelings well to the viewer.

o_o Whoa. At first I just saw a picture of the Chief staring at his helmet, but after reading your comment about it and looking back at it, I see what you mean. The sheer pain of his loss has to be unimaginable.

I know how that feels. I try to make many of my writings touch the hearts of those who read it, but very rarely do I get more than a few people that actually see the message I'm trying to get across. I'm working on it though.

Awe, poor Chief. He's one of those tortured heroes, his life's pretty much been an exercise in "taking one for the team". (Yes, that's a thought I had while reading Company 0051)
This is a beautiful portrait. I love the way you draw Chief, one of the things that I like is the fact you've thought to give him scars. A lot of people don't.
It's like he's looking himself in the eyes, in a way. I love the emotion. It's a sort of "It hurts like hell, but you know you have to keep going" sort of thing.

As always from you Jame, seemingly effortless art; it's got wonderful depth and texture and he really really looks so completely miserable... It's brilliantly depressing.
