BTW. I realise it isn't entirely precise, but the issue is so muddy I very much doubt anyone would come up with a precise analogy that's easy to remember and accessible to people who know fuck all about typefaces and fonts.

*fave'd* ... Pithy and visually memorable way to convey the distinction, one that long-time typographers like me find erupting in our brains when type is discussed.
It's not a wholly precise analogy, but that phrasing will serve well. I just wish that Adobe and Apple hadn't misused "font" in the first place, a quarter-century ago, with the LaserWriter and the advent of PostScript.
It's too late to be corrected now, either in design or in the broader computer-using culture {sigh}

Yeah, I hate using the word font because it always produces the image of a naked marble statue of a two year old pissing whiskey.
