I'm picturing a world where the biological creatures were invented by these robots as tactical or utility drones in conditions unfavorable to electronics.

To begin with, this seems to me like one of James' casual sketches for practice. Not every painting has to be polished.
Secondly if you read his description he was inspired by Zedig. Have you seen his paintings?
And finally, if you're going to critique something in a negative way, at least do it professionally and make it constructive.
James - Loving your style, It was also your paintings that made me go out and start buying Magic Cards, though I've still yet to buy your card after 2 core sets and 6 extra booster packs. I'm going mad.

In your defence to the fanboy bashing you are getting incase it has slightly affected you:
1. your Original Post was far from negative.
2.sketching varies at all levels and doesn't always have to be perfect, this we agree, but also whilst sketching people still, majority of the time vie for accuracy in proportion, or I should say, fix anything that jars their eyes. I see the issue with the girl immediately and back you on that, and if I had the skill james had, actually even now with my low skill, i'd fix that because it is literally No hassle to do so.
In defence of James though, a appropriate, watcher affinity building response would be "Meh, couldn't be arsed xD"

You will always make an ass of yourself if your critiques are opinion, not fact based.
As far as fandom goes, do not delude yourself no matter where your critique is pointed towards, if it comes out the way it happened here (you trying to "defeat" someone instead of helping with constructive criticism) soon or a later someone will get in your face about it.

her head is too wide and her mouth and hair are weird, those ARE facts. and as I said before I only pointed out where the mistakes are to him because im well aware of his skill level and trust him to know exactly what he needed to do to fix the problems.

I already said everything I had to say dude, and better yet - its written down so you can go back and read it, is there really a point in repeat it? Good critique should aim to improve someone's skill and nothing more, for example "that is not how biceps brachii should look when flexed.." or "your composition is pretty static and boring..", bad critique is what you did, something based on your personal bias "I don't like wide faces, thus I'do not like your work" or "her mouth reminds me of that rubber girlfriend I had, we had bad breakup so I don't dig it" or "Your main character reminds me of a bully who used to hit me in school, so I dislike your work!"... I hope you get the idea. Maybe her hair (I don't think that's her hair by the way) was meant to look like gollum's, you being so sure of what the artist is trying to say is nothing short of arrogance.
