I did promise a while back I would touch on this subject so I quickly made some sketches.

First, my way of going about it is simply, draw a circle.

Your circle may not be perfect but during sketching everything is allowed.

Start adding a smaller circle on the side of your circle, this circle must take up 2/3 of the vessel.

From here on out, you can decide in which direction the character is looking, based on the line you draw from the middle. I included an example to see where to go from there.

I hope this might help in some way, I quickly came up with these characters so they might not be refined but still haha ^^
