Description
My final for my CHaracter Design 1 class, redesigns of characters from the film Metropolis by Fritz Lang. I didn't realize how limited the color palette was until I printed this out for the presentation. Oh well, I couldn't be bothered to change it now that the term has been over 4 weeks ago and I start class again tomorrow... arggggh. Got a B in the class, and I was a little disappointed in myself for not being able to pump out as many ideas as I could. Must work harder next time.Related content

I think Rotwang lost his right arm not left.
I also think you should have gotten an A+++

You get a B for THAT? Then they're expecting a lot, indeed.

Maria and her robot counterparts are great...not so sure about giant yellow spandex Rotwang tho. Still, great style and colouring especially.

I like the limited palette. It seems appropriate. After all, the original had a limited range of colors as well!

These are great.
Your designs lead me to believe you have experience with metropolis beyond the film. Have you read the Thea Von Harbou novel?

Nope, is this the novel the film is based upon?

You could say that ... she wrote the screeplay for the movie and the book at the same time. It's pretty amazing that you haven't read the book, you must be incredibly perceptive!

Arrg?
Janet sometimes you need a kick in the beehive.
Lets go sit on a rock together for night and refocus on not ART SCHOOL SHIT.
Amanda Translation:
Janet! This is sooo good. Not to dilute my first complement- it makes me swim in awe at your rendering skills. But, on a side note, you need to look at things in a different perspective!
Perhaps we should try to stop ourselves from falling into that "art school/ art student" mentality .
Not that we have fallen in it yet (AND NEVER WILL), but, it is always better to have a strong grasp on the perspective that the essence of LIFE and a sound mind has to offer compared to what a school life/mentality has to offer.
And the same applies to our future.
Remain on the path that we know in our hearts.
Tis very broad but you know what I mean.
And I will always be willing to to help you as you have helped me.

For this one I sketched out the characters, inked them manually and scanned them in to color them on Photoshop CS2. I use the airbrush hard round 13. This probably answers the last question you asked, but as for technique, what do you specifically want to know about? You can pm me at the forums for I tend to fail at replying to DA comments.

For this one I sketched the designs and then inked them manually before scanning them in and coloring them on Photoshop CS2. I use the airbrush hard round 13 brush on the default brush list. I hope that answered your last question... but as for technique, what specific questions do you have? You can pm me on the fanboys forums because I generally tend to fail at replying to comments on DA.

This is by far one of the best character designs you have ever come up so far. Each individual character looks very unique in their own aspects, which is a major plus.

+1 Love the Costumes Comment!
This is what character design is all about. Dunno about your own standards, but these really sizzle on the page. "Futuristic" is the perfect word to describe the costumes.

eee costume designs *0*
the colour pallet's not that unvaried, it just has a certain metallic scheme to it
maybe it's a subconscious decision on ur part reflecting ur impression of the film._.

By jimmeny, you're right!
Or perhaps I am releasing my inner turmoil created by grueling and mechanical routine that school enforces upon my monotonous and unfortunately linear life._.
