Description
so this was supposed to just be a testy thingy of some new graphite sticks I have, but then she started looking like jennifer connelly (I wish I would randomly start looking like jennifer connelly someday), and then one thing led to another and all the sudden it turned into some serious Labyrinth fanart.cause lets face it; Jim Henson + Brian Froud + David Bowie (way more glitterified than he ever was as Ziggy Stardust) = the most awesome movie ever.
my scanner is a suckmunch btw, so pretend this is all smooth and pretty like it is in real life.

I know right?!
The sound I kept thinking of when I was drawing this was something along the lines of "Grrrrowww!!!". Hahaha... which incidentally is quite a similar noise to the one I made when I saw your icon. MMmmmmm-Erik....

Aaagh, forgive me for taking so lokg to get to this 'un, I have been verrry sloooowly working through my devwatch backlog. You must be the several millionth person I've come across who's expressed their wholehearted endorsement of this film, so I guess I'd better track the dang thing down (although I'm sure looking at this fine drawing is almost as good ). I especially like the way you've rendered her face.

haha, Labyrinth is hilarious in that "I'm a terrible-but-sort-of-also-fantastic 80's fantasy movie" sort of way, like Legend, which served as my 5-year-old's introduction to a lifetime love of Tim Curry (and for some reason, a lifetime aversion to Tom Cruise). I swear there must have been lung ailments among the crew from glitter inhalation. Still, it's one of those movies from my childhood, so I have attachment issues. And David Bowie is pretty much the Win, so all's good.

This is good. I am happy. I actually read here, someone else has aversion toward Tom and loves Curry...same here... that feels really great.

no problem for the off topic! I love hearing about bad 80's fantasy movies!!!
Even when I was a little girl I liked Curry's character better than Tom's, it's nice to know we aren't alone.

Wow- your work is just getting better and better! I'm not the biggest fan of Labyrinth, but this is a really strong piece. Nice subtle rendering on Jennifer C.'s face- the blacks just make it look positively luminous. I also love the silky texture on the hair, and the hint of David Bowie's face in the background. The hands are also really well done.
So, in a word... AWESOMESAUCE!

thank you! It means a lot that this earned a fave from someone who isn't a big Laby fan. This is what happens when I allow myself a little more freedom with style and technique and don't get so uptight about what I'm doing. I think the medium really helped, I usually use such hard, precise tools and am so detail-oriented that I loose the forest for the trees. the graphite sticks were so soft and blunted so quickly that I had to focus more on the general and getting the tonal contrasts right rather than the detail work. It was fun! I want to try some portraiture in this method now.
thank you again! I love that I earned an 'awesomesauce'!

for the really dark areas I used the softest one I could get my hands on *holds up blackened fingers*, a smudge stick helped, and then for the details in the face I used what would be an equivalent of maybe a HB. Midtones were in between the two extreemes.

but that makes sense! So good on-the-fly-description.
I believe that when Sarah got older she was forever unsure of just how real Jareth and the Underground had been, but she cannot explain certain dreams and the feeling of someone elses presences in the room with her. So when I saw your drawing I thought to myself, "He's coming out of the shadows- that's exactly how I always see him interacting with her adult life!"
It's really good.

y'know it's funny cause I've had the same thoughts. Laby was one of those movies that my friends and I always watched at sleep overs etc. and the teenage tendency towards 3 a.m. movie philosophizing means that I've had serious, in-depth, analytical discussions about the film and what it all means. Was the Underground real? Is the worm good or evil? What does XYZ mean? How many phallic symbols can you spot in 5 min? (because teenage girls at 3 a.m.? yeah...impossible to maintain seriousness for extended periods). -I've just reread this part and realized that it makes me sound ancient. I'm only 3 years away from teenagerdom but it feels like ages!-
I always liked thinking it was real because, I mean it's a fantasy movie right? And I like fantastical stuff, and I like the idea that maybe sarah was changed by her journey more than just becoming more mature and responsible. Like she still had a connection to that world, and I guess that belief came out somewhat in the pose, and the fact that she's the one wearing the sigil and manifesting it's power. Lol...I'm starting to do it right now...my honors english 'analyze the stuffing out of everything' side is coming out.
but really, thank you, thank you for your comments, I really appreciate them!

hey, I completely understand. I actually analyzed the movie for a senior project- the significance of doors and the use of colors. It went over very well with my teacher.
The Underground- part of me has always wanted to believe it is real. Hot Goblin King or not, the place looks fun.

er...I like the turning 'glowy' into a chant bit. I'm really glad people seem to like it because I spent a ridiculous amount of time on it, and I'm real glad you like the glowy thing cause I tried real hard for that look of light kindof ... radiating from the sigil. *is still unhappy with the GK.* And i'm REALLY glad you like the hands because I was way frustrated with them and hit that "It's damn well good enough" point. haha yay I'm not living alone this year! Um..probably the same amount of happy it makes me? There will be pajama art parties! You just have to not let me get lost in the depressive cloud of "why bother drawin' everyones better than me" that I've been stuck in lately.
Mom and I talked about the hands, and she says that while they are not 100% anatomically correct, the overall effect of them is very beautiful. Welcome to the B--- family, where nothing is safe from constructive criticism. ^_^ I'm glad you gave up on them...I luff them.
