Is it really Iceland? We don't have a place called "Lofoten" here.

Indeed it is, given the strong aurora forecast the last couple of weeks I can say this one is one of the "weaker" images in terms of sky activity. But Uttakleiv is fun to shoot for sure! Thanks dude!

My pleasure.

That is the thing about weaker auroras, they are much easier to photograph and you generally have a bit more time to make a good composition.

Actually the northern lights were pretty strong cause we already saw them during the blue hour(!) but still you are very right. kp7 aurora are not easy to shoot at all when the sky is almost entirely green. I got one image of kp6 aurora at Kvalvikka and Flalkstad (there it was also during the blue hour) where we got lucky with the positioning and form as well!

Yeah, technically you can see auroras with the rising and setting sun, but it has to be something like KP9 and 3-400 GW in strenght, but it is possible.
Through some years photographing the aurora I have found that the biggest mistake is to change location, even if the aurora diminishes in strenght for a while, cause while you are moving it has a nasty tendency to power up and you have to take the shot regardless and with any composition you can make on the fly.
I have several extremely powerful aurora images I do not use since the composition wasnΒ΄t as good as I wanted, so now I stay at the location I have set out to shoot at and donΒ΄t change until either the aurora is over, it gets bright outside or I decide to stop.

I hiked Moskenesoya without having a car, so therefore I had to stay in one location the entire night and had enough time scouting for locations. I personally dont like driving around at night for the very same reason -Β  I think it is somewhat cheating - I mean everyone can get a nice green sky if one is driving 5hrs a night but then - most of the time - compositions mediocre at best. Here is a preview of an image I haven't published yet: abload.de/image.php?img=png_fl… this was maybe the strongest aurora during our stay cause of its visibility early during the blue hour.

Yes, exactly, most of the time if you put all your focus into one or two compositions in an area you will end up with far better images.

That one is nice, very natural and the aurora is very strong, that is easy to see.
