Before Robin and Slade had their dark rivalry, he was starting out as a mercenary. At the time, a rising vigilante was making life a living hell for Gotham's criminal enterprise. Going as far as crashing The Roman Empire down to the ground. He called himself Batman. Slade was contracted by Rupert Thorne to deal with The Batman perminately. Needless to say, Batman was the first man to hand Slade's first greatest defeat. For years, Slade lived with the fear of Batman, and how he utterly humilated him. He would hold onto that fear until he realized that Batman found a sidekick in Robin. As we all know the story, Slade would antagonize Robin and his Teen Titans, not only to create pain for The Boy Wonder, but also to hurt Batman where it hurts the most...his family in that of Robin.
