Description Eva unit 01 redesign from Evangelion. I was never a fan of the original design so I thought I'd update it. It lights up too. Pics of that can be seen in my gallery... Under construction.

I'm assuming your other pieces are designed from scratch (your design), but is this one a "kit" (ie, someone designs the pieces and you just have the joy of figuring out how to get them to go together)? Still pretty amazing either way!

JarrethGolding In reply to Observer14 [2013-07-06 23:52:30 +0000 UTC]

Nope, this one is still from scratch. The design is partially mine. It's based off some tv show, but I tried redesigning and thought what would it look like if there was a live action modern movie made of this and this is what I came up with. This was the first time i tried adding as much detaill as i could, which is why it's so large (4' or so) it lights up with 60 or so leds which can be seen in my gallery. Still need to finish it...

OK, that's what I thought. I couldn't quite imagine anyone insane enough to come up with a "kit" like this. I'm still fascinated with the way you create with paper. Yeah, I know each art form seems like "magic" to someone not actually practicing it, even if they are awesome in their own particular medium, but hey, your work still is pretty cool!

Thank you very much! I dunno why, but I've always been able to make stuff from paper, but I'm not so good at making models from other things like clay or dough lol paper can be tricky, but there is a lot of room for error so it's easy to mend your mistakes which I'm sure is not the case with sculpting. If something falls off or the shape is wrong I can easily adjust it, but with clay once it's done, it's done I'm sure. I'm glad you like my stuff! Your sculpting is amazing as well, very professional like it belongs on display!

Observer14 In reply to JarrethGolding [2013-07-08 02:20:50 +0000 UTC]

Clay is funny, when you get to know it... When you start a piece, it's really flexible and hard to get it to hold its shape, or smooth thing, or get little details. As it slowly drys, it goes through different stages, from stiff (you can still push things around a bit, but don't try major moves, or things will break) to hard (you can burnish out surfaces, but its REALLY easy to break). Then you fire it, and it's definitely permanent, but not really finished until you figure out how to glaze it (or in the case of some clays, just fire it up hot enough for the clay body to begin to vitrify, or literally to melt together, just short of collapsing... Yes, it can be fun! At least you don't have to hold your breath while you put t in the kiln.

Yeah, I actually have pieces in a couple of galleries, and have sold at art sales, though not nearly as many as I would like... :-P

That's cool. It's sound like it can be stressful, but the pay off is worth it. Paper is no where near as complicated, but it can have its frustrations. That's cool! One day I hope to be able to find better coloring methods so my stuff will look better

Observer14 In reply to JarrethGolding [2013-07-08 13:06:24 +0000 UTC]

Have you tried starting with colored card-stock for your paper? That wouldn't have the designs, but at least the base color would be consistent.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JarrethGolding In reply to Observer14 [2013-07-08 13:20:04 +0000 UTC]

That's true. I should give it a try. I can always add designs to the base color later.

I know that you've said this is made of paper, but

1. is it "papier machΓ©"? If not, what sorts of techniques(s) paper thicknesses are you using, and how are you putting it all together?

2. Are you using any sort of interior armature/ skeleton to hold it upright/ make it more solid?

Just curious. very cool, large-sized stuff.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JarrethGolding In reply to ozwalled [2013-06-07 12:12:03 +0000 UTC]

It's actually quite simplistic. I use standard copy paper and reinforce by layering the paper if I have to. In places like the legs and torso, I make my own support rods for the interior by rolling paper up and glue the hell out of it to create a tough resin. This way I can customize the size easily before they dry and harden. Worked well for me so far. None of it's paper mΓ’chΓ©, I've never actually tried that lol it's probably the largest project I've done, roughly 4' tall. Thanks for the comment! I'm glad you like it!

Wow -- I mean, I suppose there's no reason stuff can't be done like that, and I've seen and done some stuff like that on a much smaller scale... but it's amazing that you did it for something so big. Very neat!

I'm guessing you add a layer of paint at the end, for the colour?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JarrethGolding In reply to ozwalled [2013-06-22 16:16:44 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I find it easier to make things quite large since I can add more details. This was the first time I tried adding as much detail as I could like mechanics and stuff. You can't see it there but the bicep is raised up and there are pipes and cylinders running under it. The color job is actually the worst part lol I can't paint or color worth a damn so I'm ashamed to say it's crayon and sharpie lol maybe if I learn to paint I can go back and fix it one day.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ozwalled In reply to JarrethGolding [2013-06-22 19:23:34 +0000 UTC]

Still, looks pretty good for crayons and Sharpies, I must say. Quite good, even.

As for painting over it, if you ever get the hankering to do so, you may want to add an extra paper layer, or at the very least do a test first on some similarly coloured paper, as wax from your crayons/ pencils may repel the paint so that it doesn't set/ stick properly.

Trying out paint for something like this certainly can be messier though, so I can understand the reluctance. To do it on the cheap, consider covering the floor and any other stuff in your workspace that you don't want to get paint on with plastic shower curtains from a dollar store -- they can be surprisingly good dropsheets in a pinch. Plus, painting, drying time aside, would probably be a lot faster than using pencils for big stuff.

Thank you . Yeah, the color still serves its purpose i suppose.I have another project I did that I didn't use crayons on that I'm considering painting as practice so we'll see how that turns out. Thank you very much for the tips, I'll give it a try!

The only other alien stuff I have is that queen chestburster statue on the bottom shelf, another chestburster from the original movie in another room, and a small alien queen figure you can see next to the alien statue on the top shelf. I have more predator stuff actually LOL I used to have a few of those McFarlane dragons too.

I was 18, but it's never too late. Some people have it harder than others and need to focus on taking care of school, finding a job, etc. before moving out, it's just not financially possible sometimes. As long as you have the aspiration to move on and take care of what needs to be taken care of, that's what matters.
