So, CoffeeAddictedDragon is hosting a contest in celebration of the first anniversary of her mer-based YGO fic, Encounter , here on DeviantArt. The submission deadline is tomorrow and I was fortunate enough to finish my three pieces in time. The main rule was that we had to draw three scenes from three of our favorite chapters already written for Encounter. I decided to join because it forced me to practice drawing different characters and digital coloring, and with a deadline to boot. This was the first of three pictures drawn and the third of three colored. I'm hoping this one counts, since it was just a flashback in chapter 19, but it was still described! The flashback is Yami remembering an instance when Yugi was stroking his hair to help calm him down after he'd had a nightmare which he then uses in real time to help Mana with her terror of the thunderstorm.

I sketched it out on paper and then colored it with GIMP. Well, coloring-wise, this was especially challenging for me, and not because it was my first time drawing Yugi. This is literally the first time I've ever used darker/duller colors to indicate darkness without cheating and just casting a lower-opacity film over the entire piece. I guess I still could have done that to help me out with the tone, but I didn't think to. Oh well. The bright, light bluish squiggles and dots all over the place are supposed to be plankton and other shinies rising up from the ocean depths to take advantage of night feeding. I don't much care for Yugi's expression (I don't think I did it right), but I quite like Yami's.
