Description I'm trying to learn how to paint environments. This took 3 and a bit hours, but I want to do something like this in an hour or less.

Critiques would be appreciated. Help me improve!

Srsly what that guy said... DO MORE!
Do one every week I say! You got soooo much potential in this area... follow the enviro a week from conceptart.org or something. And how else can I talk to you online if you dont use msn?
I kinda want my Prismas back... you using them?

I borrowed them off you? It's been so long I can't remember where I got them from. They've just been sitting here for ages, I think they might be a bit dry by now.

As for environment sketches.. I do them but not from scratch. I do "paintovers" of the stuff I'm working on now but I can't show that stuff to people yet. I've been looking to start from the basics with my drawing skills. I'm ordering a bunch of DVDs to help me out there since I don't really know how to go about it (drawing human anatomy etc). I don't feel like just doing speedpaints like this is going to be the best way to spend my time atm... there so much I need to understand to paint more effectively, and I wont gain that understanding at a reasonable pace if I just doodle all day. I really actually want to go back to uni or an art college or something, but it might be too late for that.

Remind me to not lend you anything... Yes, studying this stuff would be a DREAM. But for now, It remains a luxury. And you're avoiding that other question... if I can't talk to you on msn what DO you use? I wont bug you ALL the time...

I don't really use any chat apps except gtalk for work. As for your prismas, if you want new ones I'll buy 'em for you.

It looks great to be honest. ^^ The only fault I see, is the section on the left. The perspective seems off on the beam/passageway. I'm assuming you were trying to make it look like it was coming straight at the camera, if so, the lines would be shorter from front to back to give it a "raised" illusion. Also you could of given it a darker shadow since you have the harsh lighting from the ceiling. That little bit would really give the whole picture a HUGE sense of depth and realistic contrast.

But keep it up, this looks amazing for a speed paint.

reckon you should dim down the bright passage on the left, to help keep the main focus on the foreground.
maybe just a touch of reflected light on those diagonal crossbeams, looks like they should receive a little close to the joint. probably help pop them out further in front.
not sure why but the two main lines leading toward the left light look a bit strange, think line defining the edge of the of walkway with the two lights on it is ever so slightly out...

overall... better than what i can do
ooh yeah, since your light source is so bright, and some of the surfaces are wet; a few highlights on the reflecting surfaces might make it look more 'wet'.. yeahh thats all i can think of

A small detail, the door at the right part of the image looks a bit weird.

it's not full size, I lowered it for the site, but it's a speed paint - it's not about detail

OrganisedChaos In reply to jason [2007-07-24 22:45:33 +0000 UTC]

but i LIKE detail so to hell with your antidetail work!
im aware u lowered the scale, that was my point, keep it big. cos size matters, id know, i get shit about my size ALL THE TIME.
you shouldnt take that seriously but i know you will, ur an ass like that.
anywho, being that its "speed paint" i really dont know what it is im meant to comment on, so ill just leave it be.

while this is pretty cool its a bit "stiff". you kinda get the feeling that you could do alot better pretty quickly with more practise. hope you keep posting, showing off your progress

wow long time in the making...umm, maybe more variation in colour, unless you're going for a more sterile. The girders at the bottom look like there is too much white outlines on the details...not sure tho, that was just a first impression. I'd love to see a landscape or something, a sunset...a cityscape i dunno...but that would take longer than an hour. I like the sketchyness around the lightsource. All i can say is...do more!

I wouldn't say "sterile". I pulled the colour to make it seem sort of dead and abandoned, but mostly cold, wet, and dreary. I don't know what you mean by "sketchyness", though. Are you talking about the rain?

therealarien In reply to jason [2007-07-14 02:25:26 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i think im talking about the rain...probably. Lets just say its a place I wouldn't want to be for very long...it looks lonely!
