Description
Teeth (self portrait)16" x 20"
acrylic on panel
Rue Morgue magazine asked me to to be a part of their 100th anniversary issue, where they commissioned 16 of their favorite horror artists to paint an original piece that exemplifies a personal nightmare.

This painting speaks of a recurring nightmare I have where my teeth crunch and crack and fall out. I did some research, and apparently I fear the loss of something "permanent" in my life. Hmmm.

Ouch. Β When this pic came on the screen, I wasn't expecting it, so I'm in a bit of shock.
Great job!

holy fuck, i can relate to that: i've got 3 broken stumps of teeth right on my grill:i look like some backwoods meth head crep, and i've never evene seen the stuff: i just have naturally brittle teeth--some fucked up British genetic mutation: but i'm lucky: my gums are healthy: i've seen pictures of folks with that awful "gum disease"--or worse: NOMA: these Africans with their entire faces eaten away, only to reveal perfect, gleaming white teeth under the festering meat... the wotrld is a strange and fucked up place... i been thinking of writing a story where a guy with my problem goes into a dentists's office and forces the golfing asshole to fix all of his teeth, for free...

Haha, I have the same kind of nightmare. It starts with the feeling a few teeth are loose, when i take a look in the bathroom mirror most of them are eroded and "rotten". When I touch them they simly drop out. And they just keep comming an comming, hundreds of em, spitting them out until I cant hold them in my cupped hands...crazy. Ive heard its symbolizes bad self esteem, but I dunno....im pretty confident.
Anyways, cool painting

I find those dreams annoying, but that's an awesome way of portraying the vision.

I have the same dream. My mouth gets tense and the more I try to open it the more my teeth crack up. It always ends with my teeth exploding...

Bravo! "I'm still trying to figure out when to use cool colors in the shadows, and when to use darker warm colors. Any suggestions on where to get info on this issue? (books..tips, etc?)." I`ve been wondering the same thing, like the "secondary" shadows (or reflections) on the teeth flying, how did u know to paint em light greenish blue? looks superb

It's all about choice, really. It's like when you choose to make a piece high or low contrast. Whatever moves you. sometimes cool shadows against warm light adds color contrast. Sometimes you can use warm shadows to keep the colors closer together. I usually do opposites. Cool light, warm shadows, and vice versa. A great book is color and Light by James Gurney. It's full of technical instruction that should help you.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Color and Light is on the way by mail! I actually just started a big portrait of a friend of mine. I`ts of him holding another smaller portrait of himself. Was planning on making the bigger one cold and the smaller one warm, so this will be a good painting to experiment with.
If I could ask you one more thing, how do you digitalize your paintings? The quality is amazing, brightness etc. I use a camera I just bought but cant seem to get it right. If u use a camera, do you do any post rendering? Do you get it professionaly scanned?
Sorry for the 20 questions
Appreciate it!

I scan my own pieces. I own an Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner (Epson's are great, but they might make a new model to replace this one, as it's a couple years old). It's 8.5" x 11", and the lid comes off, so I can scan large pieces in multiple parts, and piece it together in Photoshop. AFTER piecing it back together, adjust contrast and color balance, so it matches the original and/or improves on the original.

I used to have dreams like that. I had a dream once that I bit a bit of gummie bear and my teeth shattered. It felt so real. When I woke up, I was saying, "Oh thank you!"
This is a very nice work of art and you know it.
