Description

This scene involved a bit of kit-bashing to get the scene I wanted. I thought it only appropriate to credit the artists who designed the models I used.

My initial reaction to this render was "amazing." So many tools in Reality/Luxrender's toolbox being used here. The metals, the water, the fog, the lighting. After going back to look at it a couple times; I am just more and more impressed. IMHO, you have captured a great deal of what Reality and Luxrender are capable of and distilled it all into one image. Not sure if you were swinging for the fences on this one; but you certainly hit a home run. I'm not sure if its my screen or the render; but, there seems to be a couple hot pixels near the feet of the left lion. The lighthing on the budhha stops just short of blowing out the statue and gives the great impression of a beam of light shining down on it. Just a wonderful render all-around.

Thank you for take the time to comment, I really appreciate it. I was walking a fine line on the lighting for the statue. I was trying to get the dull gold metal effect, without looking unrealistic. And I didn't want it to look shiny since that would go against the whole "lost" atmosphere I was going for.

The hot pixels you noticed are actually gem effects I applied to the paw stones. It's hard to see the detail in the online image, but the center of the stone is actually a red gem. The edges / facets (the hot pixels) are actually reflections from the light.

That being said, I might try a second render with the camera positioned closer to those gems. To see what the reflection / refraction effect would look like.

possibly even position the camera a wee bit behind the paw looking towards the statue.. sort of a mouse's eye view with some DoF blurring out the paw a bit.  IDK.. for me it would be worth at least a test render to see how things looked.  I sometimes like trying wild POV's.

That's pretty close to what I was thinking about trying tonight.

I was also thinking of trying to get a "half and half" where the edge of the stone cuts across the mid-point of the statue. But I have a funny feeling that it won't look very good. I think the facets of the gem might be a little too pronounced.

That being said, an up close on the gem might be interesting too. If the facets are big enough to cause distortion.

I just have a feeling that the closer to the camera is to the gem the bigger the impact on render time. So some options might not be too feasible.

I don't have anything new to render, so my render machine is sitting idle. So I have time to experiment a bit.

Thank you. Coming from you that means a lot to me. I used at least one of your light rigs in that scene, plus those same light rigs led me to do this:

This really is one of the most amazing images I saw lately. Also very nice to hear you used some of my light thingies to create this! The curved light parented to the camera was certainly a good idea That is why I made one with a snoot for the nearly-to-be-released set CLS for Reality that you can find in my store here on DA.

The parented light came out of desperation. I think that was during the small window of time where your lights had not yet been updated for the latest release. I smacked myself in the head for not thinking of it sooner, since it was so obvious.

I am not skilled enough to know when to or not to use the snoot. I couldn't even tell you what the purpose of it is...

However I am going to keep my eyes out for the next batch of your lights. I am sure I will use them every bit as much as I used the previous versions.

Thank you! Getting the fog to look realistic...well, wasn't easy.
