Onyx had a good childhood growing up until he was about 7 when his father Obsidian (shown on the far right) passed away from a heart attack. Although he took well care of himself his father had severe heart problems and he had to have several surgeries for it growing up and eventually his condition required him to have a pace maker. He was relatively young when his pace maker short circuited and he collapsed. They were sadly unable to revive him. (Note: All of Onyx's heart conditions he inherited from his father but he took different routes to get better.)

Candy Cane (shown on the far left) took good care of him and although upset over Obsidian's death didn't really change much in how she took care of Onyx and his older sister Amber Rose (not shown) since she was "numb" to death do to working as a nurse in the emergency room hospital in Manehatten. However after Onyx went in for his own heart surgery at the age of 9 Candy Cane simply vanished. It is unknown if she committed suicide, ran off in grief, or abandoned him and his sister. No one has seen her since and Onyx now age 19 (or 39 if he has kids) holds out little hope in finding her. There have been clues coming in until his late twenties of what happened to her but after 20 years they declared her legally dead since no one could find anything that could possibly lead them to her beyond "sightings" of a pink mare with a striped mane from all over Equestria.

After Candy disappeared and Onyx recovered from his surgery both him and his sister were sent to live with his grandmother Melon Sweets (Candy Cane's Mother) she ran a farm just outside of Ponyville and Onyx spent the rest of his childhood years there until he moved out at 23 with his girlfriend Metalica Gears.

Due to growing up on this farm Onyx became incredibly strong from hauling carts and plows for his grandmother and it helped him overcome his problems. However an accident led to his leg getting injured and infected leading up to him needing to have it amputated. He was spiteful and exceedingly depressed at first but this accident led to him meeting his soon to be girlfriend and future wife Metalica Gears.

In general he has had a rather upbeat attitude about all that has happened in his life and thinks everything has happened for a reason.
