I am an alternate mod for an alternate universe blog where Celestia became "Nightmare" Celestia -also known as Solar Flare- and was banished to the sun.
Her older sister Princess Luna was forced to gather the remaining citizens of Equestria and repair. She rules from the underground city of Canterlot where her citizens live in the darkness of night and sleep through the warmth of day.

The title "Queen" came to her when Celestia began to fade into little more than a myth. She was often referred to by her loyal guard as the "Queen of the Night" and as time went on she began to be known as "Queen of Equestria"

I love the little mosaic moons inside the moons in her breastplate& crown. Also think the story is pretty cool. But can't shake the fact Disney started the tradition of queens being evil. So why call Luna that if she be good?

It's due to the title she was given when she simply ruled over the night. I.e Queen of the Night.
Plus this is a different more...military...Equestria. A queen is needed more than a princess.

Oh no I get that, a martial law, but Luna was already pretty well adapted to discipline. In my eyes, her title was fine as is. Just saying

She does have co-rulers but they still go by "Princess"
And not necessarily martial law. Just a more violent Equestria.
