As his name suggests Death is infact dead or more clearly in an inbetween state. Not quite not quite alive and definitely not undead.

Long story short the position of Death is passed down when a dying man/woman kills the current bearer of the cloak and scythe. They are healed and take the spot as an immortal. So long as they wear the cloak they cannot be killed. When they start to become relaxed in their station they tend to "slip" and that is normally when they are struck down.

Death here has been in his position for roughly a thousand years and has not aged a day nor has his appearance changed (Warning: When wearing the cloak and performing his job he takes on the illusion of being a skeletal pony) He met his end when he was in his teenage years and become very sick. No cure was offered and he attempted to kill himself to end the pain when the Death before him walked in early. Scared he through the knife and it caught the reaper in the throat killing him instantly.
