Description
The second in my collection of Hanna Barbera 70's tributes. I loved Blue Falcon and Dynomutt (The Dog Wonder!) when I was a kid, but to my four-year-old eyes, I hard difficulty distinguishing BF from Batman. The costumes were relatively similar, after all. So for this tribute, I have taken more liberties than with my Captain Caveman piece, and make some subtle changes to the duo's appearance. I figured a guy modeling himself after a falcon should have those characteristics, so I made his cape split in the back into two segments and give it a more"feathered" look (in the cartoon, BF had a plain blue cape). I also gave his gloves the same feather treatment and heightened the talon look of his boots. I also varied the color scheme a bit. In the cartoon, BF was all one shade of blue, which seemed kinda boring and muddled his featured a little. So I split up his costume into his traditonal blue for his cape, trunks and gloves and gave him a darker blue for everything else, just to break up the monotony. I also redesigned his chest embled. In the original, he just had an F, like he flunked an algebra test or something. But the guy was BF, so I added the letter and made the emblem reflective of his name as well (belt buckle, too, both of which were just arbitrary shapes in the original cartoon). I did manage to keep the very cool beak and hawkeye elements to his cowl, and made sure to make the shadowing of his eyes (as in the original version) a key element to his look. I feel like I captured his essense and familiarity while managing to improve on the concept (hopefully). For Dynomutt, I kept his color scheme, but redesigned his costume slightly. I ditched the 70's Elvis collar that he once had, as well as the weird backpack/vest thing that he sported. In my version he just has a simple cape and boots, which I figure is all a cyborg dog needs. I chose to just have the pooch pose here rather than show off all his bionic functions, since I was aiming for a more iconic look to the duo and wanted to keep it simple. But in my version, his powers would still be in tact, so no worries. I also gave him a more cartoony appearance, and probably made him look stupider than he originally did. But afterall, Dynomutt was the cousin of both Scooby Doo and Scooby Dumb, so he was bound to inherit a little of each cuz.
I hope I've still managed to maintain the basic essence of these guys. I feel like I did, anyway. I'm just trying to avoid being too literal in my interpretations. If I simply drew them the way they looked line for line in the original contexts, then it's not really a tribute in my style, y'know?

If it hadn't been for "Harvey Birdman: Attourney at Law" I would never have heard of the Blue Falcon... not that I have any idea from Harvey Birdman what the B.F. was actually like.

Blue Falcon and Dynomutt as Cartoon cartoons. That would have been a good show.

Neato take, Jay- I love this HB-superhero duo. I like how your version of Blue Falcon kinda looks like a cartoony Nite Owl, and Dynomutt finally has a costume that makes sense (if that makes sense). This makes me think of that ever-so awesom episode of Dexter's Laboratory, where Dexter teamed up with them to stop Dynomutt's rogue replacement

I loved this show to pieces as a kid! Dynomutt's expression totally cracks me up here. Only today do I realize how much Blue Falcon's "serious" demeanor contributed to the show. Plus his costume was just plain awesome.

The color and style (especially BF's boots) are Very 70's retro. Seems like he's out to fight crime and maybe a quick split to a Disco.
Bravo! Dyno-mut is brilliant. This would be run to work with and animate for if WB ever did want to do more of their HB licenses.

I never really got BF, but I wish I'd had achance to see the BF SD crossover. Looked like a hoot.
Did you catch the BF double episode on Harvey Birdman AAL? He makes a much better latino eurotrash crossbreed than an american.

Yeah, that's the downside of Harvey Birdman. He's introduced long forgotten Hanna Barbera characters to modern audiences (albiet lampooning them), making it harder for me to offer up my tributes. The expectations are already there, y'know?

CaptainOscillator In reply to JayFosgitt [2006-12-17 09:27:09 +0000 UTC]
but the expectations of you and HB are two entirely differnt things. your pieces honour them for what they were, while HB takes the piss out of them.

Dynomutt and Blue falcon! Had you drawn the falcon ship, my happiness would be complete.
I remember as a kid I'd use to steal my dad's garden tools and tie a rope to the handle to mimic that sweet grappling claw BF carried around. Gah! I'm currently hoping to land a job designing toys, and a grappling hook is definitely at the top of the list of things I'd like to take a shot at.
Anyway, great job! Interesting take on Dynomutt. He certainly doesn't look like his overly plucky old self here, but come to think of it, that was never handled all that well anyway. I'd love to see this more sober, morose, "yeah, whatever"-minded cyberpooch in action, see how it compares. I think I'd like it better.

Well, I didn't mean for Dynomutt to look morose or like a downer, moreso just fun-stupid, like Scooby Dumb. It seemed like Frank Welker was basing his voice off of Bullwinkle anyway, who seemed to fit that fun-stupid mold, so that's what I was going for. Glad you liked it, though.

Great guns, Jay! You did fantastic with these two! BF looks superb, and Dog-Wonder . . . man could he get more goofy than that? Kudos man!
Looking forwards to seeing your work with Jabber and the girls . . . Poor fishface should get some respect this time around (we hope!)
Sidenote -- One of the girls from your Capt. Caveman piece, Brenda I think (the brown haired one?)... I'd so love to see her given a solo treatment. She was my favorite. ^_^
Rock on, my friend! Keep up the great work and thanks again for sharing!

Many thanks! I love BF and Dynomutt. If I had the chance to do a comic with them, I'd definitely update them so as to distance them from the obvious Batman influence in which they were created. I think they could be so much cooler on their own without such connections.

Thanks for the kind words as always. I just may tackle Space Ghost yet! But next up, I just finished a Hong Kong Phooey tribute that just needs coloring, then that will get the grand release. After that, I'm either leaning towards Jabberjaw or Grape Ape. While I love giant gorillas, Jabberjaw gives me the excuse to draw a relatively monstrous lkooking character flanked by hot women, so that just may take precident! Jeez, I hope my work isn't going to paint me as sexist. Seriously. Maybe I should go with the ape...
