Description To commemorate my favorite month (October) and my favorite holiday (Halloween), I'm doing a monster sketch per day.

I'd wanted to draw Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for awhile, but wasn't sure I could do anything new with them. Then it struck me to do a female Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde, and I suddenly felt like I could bring something fresh to the table. Granted, there have been gender-swapped takes on Jekyll and Hyde in the past, but they almost always had Hyde as a sexy knock-out in modern day. I chose to keep everything in Victorian times, and decided Jekyll would be a prim and dowdy physician, while Hyde would look more like a maniacal prostitute, with sharp features (and a sharp razor) and an insane grin.

Y'know, not long ago I found a series of "gender swapped" lilterary classics on Amazon.  Brainchild of an "Eve Sinning."  I haven't read the Jekyll and Hyde book, but I can't help wondering if it's anything like this!

BTW, just noticed-Ms. Hyde looks a little like Lena Hyena from WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT ("Finally-a MAY-UHN!")

Whoa. This would make a great story-a nice reinvention of the classic tale (and probably one of my all-time favorite stories).

Were it done like the 1931 movie, maybe one of her suitors would be a genteel Victorian fellow, the other a man from the wrong side of the tracks.

BAD ASSED!  Your Mrs. Hyde is a woman of negotiable virtue that could show Jack the Ripper a thing or two about the slice and dice.  Actually, she looks a lot like a Jessica Rabbit gone completely psycho.  Great work in figuring out how to do a female version of Jekyll and Hyde.

This may be my favorite.
I love the background, it looks like broken glass and the diffused light like aura around the two (or one, depending on your philosophical view-point) adds a nice, eerie touch to the entire work.

Jekyl and Hyde are supposed to emphasize the potential for animal like or murderous behavior within all of us, the only modern interpretation that comes even close is The Lizard in The Amazing Spiderman, the deep connection to the part of the brain that is still reptilian, that is still territorial.

This work is very well done in keeping with the Victorian design and I love that rather than show Hyde as a full person, she is shown as a creature burn from the fumes of the potion that will soon unlock her. That Jekyl is a sweet, almost demure appearing woman compared to monstrous Hyde.

Thanks, James! The background is a combination of a broken glass texture I found online, plus some different digital brushes I use in Photoshop, then I faded out the edges a little.

I like the fade effect, it creates the idea of a mixed aura; that while Jeykls intentions may have been purely scientific, Hydes are purely evil in nature.

I hope you continue with more of these classic monsters; so many great books to choose from or old folklore.
Tommyknockers, Bloody-Mary, Lochness, Liche, Ghouls...oh ghouls...they feed on the dead but cross a grave and they'll have your head.

I imagine Ms Hyde having a twisted flirtatious personality that would come off more morbid then alluring.

I love how you look at these old classic characters and think up a way to do 'em like nobody's seen before Bravo!
